President-elect Donald Trump is expected to try to halt a potential U.S. ban of TikTok next year, after he promised on the campaign trail to save the popular social media app if he won, according to people familiar with his views on the matter…

    * In his first presidency Trump tried to close/force sell TikTok and failed in court. Now TikTok isn’t a national security ?

Ban this, ban that, or just leave it alone. Let the people decide if it works for them or it doesn’t. It’s a free world with a lot of risks when you sign up for social media of whatever flips the zip in your zazz. At one time TikTok apparently seemed a risk to national security. Things change and judging by the interest in the app itself, there isn’t much noise sounding off an alarm.

I use Chrome’s bypasspaywall extension so I am not aware if a site is paywalled.

Let’s keep this to the banning of Tik Tok and leave the rest of the politics out of it, please.

Okay, I apologize, sometimes it’s just really hard to resist.  It won’t happen again.

      Until this occurs, it’s speculation.

Alex, always make sure you provide gift links to paywall sites.

Either we support journalism or we don’t.  Obviously I’d prefer that we do in some circumstances.

If social media like tictok is not a threat/potential threat why does the PRC prohibit Facebook and not tictok? Its because FB is from ‘there’ for China and tictok is from ‘here’ for them. Just the opposite for us.

Supreme Court appears likely to clear the way for ban or sale of TikTok

The Supreme Court appeared likely to clear the way for a federal law that would shut down TikTok in the United States in less than two weeks unless the popular video-sharing platform divests from Chinese ownership…

..the ability of the Chinese government to harvest the sensitive data of millions of American users and to potentially use that information to blackmail young Americans or turn them into spies

      * That says it all about the US paranoia.

For the most part blackmail would not be my concern. Directing content presentation via unknowable (to us) algorithms and compiling user info for subtler influencing does.

TikTok says it will shut down in US blocking existing users from using the service.

Meanwhile Senator Edward J. Markey announced his plan to introduce legislation, the Extend the TikTok Deadline Act, to delay the deadline by which ByteDance must sell TikTok or face a ban by an additional 270 days.

Users are flocking to TikTok’s Chinese replacement RedNote (no.1 on apps store)
