Went to my cell phone store today to change my phone plan. While I was waiting, a fellow came in–I’d call him “elderly,” but my wife reminds me that I’m in that category too. Let’s say he was “more elderly.” Anyway, he told the salesman that he kept getting a notification that he has “one hundred messages,” and he can’t understand why. He pushed a few buttons on his cell phone and said, “There it is again! Listen.” The salesman listened and said, “No, it’s telling you that you have ‘one unheard message’.” Everyone cracked up except the salesman. He restrained himself until the customer left.

AskWoody LoungerDecember 21, 2009 at 2:46 am #1193390Even though this is somewhat amusing, I feel sorry for the gentleman in question because, in reality, a lot of us will be there some day. This is exactly why this old guy gets his hearing tested every year now. So far not so bad, but my loss of hearing is like the sunrise tomorrow, I know its coming.
Cheers and a Merry Christmas to all.

P.S. Just noticed that tomorrow (Dec 22) (or today depending where you are in the world) will be my ninth anniversary as a member of Woody’s lounge, now Windows Secrets Lounge. It has been an enjoyable 9 years and my thanks to all who have helped me with my many problems and queries over those years. I also hope that I have been able to help a few along the way as well.

I should have mentioned that the gentleman had a very thick German accent. Being of a German-Russian background and experiencing how my immigrant grandparents spoke, I think it was not a hearing problem but a dialect issue.

AskWoody LoungerDecember 22, 2009 at 4:12 am #1193650Well being a over 60 myself, despite having good hearing I am a complete novice when it comes to modern mobile phones (as we call them in the UK). My old one was the size of a brick and did everything it was designed to do, i.e make and receive phone calls, but it woudn’t work in the USA to ring home. I took the plunge and got one with wi-fi, 3g camera, video, all the stuff the youngsters take for granted. After unpacking the phone playing with the menus , I made a phone call to test it – but couldn’t hear anything. My wife was on my home phone at the side of me, trying to help me set it up and after a lot of fiddling we worked out how to turn the phone volume up – but I still couldn’t hear anything. Then my wife said – just a minute – there’s a transparent sticker on the screen, and its covering the earpiece ! So, having removed that I could now hear her but it was still very quiet, so we went through all the instructions and menus and yes , it was set up OK.
Eventually by trial and error holding it – it came quite loud and thats when I realised that I was listening to the screen – and hadn’t lined up the tiny hole which forms the earpiece – with my ear.I’m really quite savvy at compters and technology, but I’ve never been interested in mobile phones – as you can tell !

I’ll add what might be an informative note even though we’re in the Scuttlebutt forum. My hearing has been going down hill for a long time and earlier this year I gave in to the ENT doc’s suggestion that it’s time for a little “amplification!” Wow, the price of hearing aids is outta sight, but I got a decent one and ALSO bought an extra gadget called an iCom from a company called Phonak. This is a bluetooth device for linking the hearing aid to one or more telephones. I’ve got it setup for my mobile phone which is always in my shirt pocket. It’s a wonderful aid and I would highly recommend one to someone who wears a hearing aid.
The only “negatives” are that it’s a square device about 2″ x 2″ with a “cord” that allows it to hang around your neck. This cord is really its antenna. I wear mine INSIDE my shirt and its microphone is still perfectly able to pick up my voice when I talk on the phone. The other negative is that it has to be recharged every other night, but that’s OK since I don’t wear my hearing aid when I go to bed.

That is a good thing BigAl otherwise you might have Pauliez and his roving band of partiers drunk dialing you at odd hours of the night checking to see if you are having a good time! Or worse yet showing up at your doorstep!
