    HaveIBeenPwned owner suffers phishing attack
By Ellen Jennings-Trace published March 26, 2025  –  Tech Radar

“Troy Hunt, creator of popular website HaveIBeenPwned, has himself fallen victim to a phishing incident – – This incident outlines just how convincing phishing attacks can be, and shows that even the most prepared amongst us can be vulnerable.”

It is important to stay vigilant. Use VirusTotal url checker to test email links and all other links that are questionable. Hover mouse cursor over link url address and view at bottom left of browser to see where it goes and if it looks “fishy ~ phishy” = then right click it to copy link and paste it into the VirusTotal url checker, you then may need to press enter at VirusTotal url checker website to have it scanned by multiple malware testers. Bookmark the VirusTotal url checker for future use. Note the Date of last scan, if it is old then re-scan it again to be safe. Here is a link to some basic information and instructions to review:

Using Virustotal to Scan a Malicious URL

Now practice, right click above link and read the url address, then right click again and copy the address, and then paste it into VirusTotal url checker, press enter and read the multiple scanner results. Good practice to get into the habit of staying safe. – Stay Vigilant !!!

…and with jet lag and exhaustion into the bargain, we should be generous to Troy.

A rule I have is “Never work on a computer after 11 PM, or when tired or hungry, save for dire emergencies.”*

I have done just this thing a few times,* and it’s why I have that maxim stamped on my brain. The results were horrific.

      Or use passkeys,

      Only problem with Passkeys is:

      1. They are moderately expensive (Yubikey=$50 + one duplicate = $100)
      2. Not a lot of sites support them yet.

Will wait a bit on that, methinks.

(BTW, supposedly Amazon requires it’s employees to use a passkey, but doesn’t support one for it’s e-commerce customers, AFAIK. Hmm.)

Amazon has supported passkeys for ecommerce customers for more than two years:

It supports them for sellers/ business accounts, but I just checked my buyers account (I only buy) and there’s no place to set up a passkey.

Nice to see that more and more places are supporting. Unfortunately, only one place I buy stuff over the web is on that list. Neither is my bank or credit union.

(Also, I’m running Win 7, and support from that from MSFT is dead and gone-so is the option of storing it on my computer. I can live without one.)

It’s there for me as buyer only:

I think we’re talking about two different sites: On the Amazon “Your Account” site there is NO place in their Login/Account/Security for a dialog box for passkeys. I only see:

        1. Name
        2. Primary Phone #
        3. Password
        4. 2FA option
        5. Compromised Account?

Those are the only dialog boxes I see in my Amazon Account, each with an “edit” dialog box for each one.

Are you looking at/referring to a Microsoft site?

What happens if you edit the password? Does it offer alternatives?

I’ll try that when I get a spare moment, and report back. Too many plates spinning on the air right now.

Well, one of my spinning plates fell and cracked me in the head, so I then had enough time to try your suggestion, and:

      No dice.

Not a hint of anything relating to a passkey option.

      Weird, ay?

        Passkeys doesn’t support “Win7 Pro SP1 64-bit”.

        https://www.perplexity.ai/search/windows-7-and-passkeys-uz9EoJtpRB6YBKaK1TaKpQ

“Windows 7 does not support modern passkey authentication, which is based on FIDO protocols and widely used in newer Windows versions like Windows 10 and 11. Passkeys rely on advanced security mechanisms such as public/private key cryptography and are integrated with features like Windows Hello for biometric or PIN-based authentication. These features are unavailable in Windows 7, as it lacks the necessary infrastructure, such as the WebAuthn API or support for single-device passkeys.”

Well, spin my grease joints,  hit me with some Avgas 100LL, and send me to Alaska!!

…and all it took was querying an AI engine! Man, that’s rich! ROTFLLMAO! Oh, my heart! I can’t stand it….<SFX: body dropping to floor: THUD!>

These AI things are getting so good they should run for…naaah, we’d not want to see the 535 begging for their next meal on street corners…

These AI things are getting so good they should run for…

      President ?

Bill Gates explains how AI will change our lives in 5 years

In a recent interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria at the Davos World Economic Forum, Bill Gates shared his optimistic vision for the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on our lives in the near future. Gates, a pioneering force in the tech industry and co-founder of Microsoft, predicts that within the next five years, AI will transform our daily routines, offering new opportunities and enhancing efficiency in various sectors. .. (and AI will need only 640KB of memory to run)..

      • #2760922

What else would you expect Bill to say? His fortune is in Microsoft which is actively pursuing AI. Whether or not he succeeds in spending the vast majority of his fortune supporting projects that he believes are for the betterment of humankind, he has a vested interest in the financial success of Microsoft.

        • #2760970

Given the amount he has I doubt he cares how MS fare. He can’t spend the money he currently has, although he could come close by buying a social media company.  🙂

          cheers, Paul
