I just received an e-mail, looked completely legitimate, like it was the next release of Woody’s Windows Watch – when I opened it, McAfee alerted me that the attachment to the file contained a trojan. Any ideas what’s going on? I’ve deleted the e-mail…thought I should warn somebody or at least check it out.

    Thanks.

Woody doesn’t send attachments with his newsletters. If you recieved it with an attachment you shouldn’t have opened it. Fortunately, you have MacAfee paying attention for you. I’m sure Woody and all of us loungers would have liked to have had more details on that little piece of business. Unfortunate that you deleted it. Did you also empty your deleted items folder ??? If not, perhaps one of the Moderators might want you to send a copy somewhere to have it checked out. I’m sure Woody doesn’t want his name associated with some internet trojan in his newsletters !!! nope

OK, let me address this post in several ways.

First, my intention in posting this here was not to say “shame on you, Woody” but rather to ask if I was missing something. Perhaps I wasn’t perfectly clear about that, and I apologize if my post sounded accusatory.

Second, I didn’t open an e-mail with an attachment – hence my puzzlement. The e-mail didn’t appear to have an attachment, which obviously confused me. I don’t need McAfee to “pay attention” for me, as I am quite capable of paying attention on my own. I DID send the message to the appropriate place for further action. I decided to post here in order to search for a little clarity.

Again, I did not intend to associate Woody’s name with a virus or suggest that he intentionally sent it to anyone.

It was quite right of you to post as you did. Unlikely as it may be that WWW would contain a virus, it was a good idea to report the virus warning you got.

Claude’s message in the latest newsflash explains what caused the warning.

Guess it’s my turn to apologize for the tone of my post. blush I came across rather terse when I should have been more welcoming to a new lounger, and for that I apologize. I was responding to one particular part of your post…..

We get a lot of novice users here in the Lounge and they often do the strangest things and then wonder why they are having problems. And of course, they didn’t do anything to cause them. nope With all the phishing and spoofing going on these days I assumed (and that was my error) that you were a relative “newbie” and had opened what you assumed (there’s that word again) was Woody’s news letter and was in fact an infected spoof with a loaded attachment that you subsequently opened and set off your AV software. My choice of words in my reply was, shall we say, less than ideal. bingo I was insulting and you have every right to be upset by my response. That’s one of the reasons we have the excellent Mods, like Hans, to inform us about things like Claude’s post and to smooth over the rough spots caused by heavy handed oafs like myself. You were correct to post your concerns here and I should have been more receptive to your concerns and less concerned about Woody’s rep. Again, my apologies. bow

            Apology accepted!

Trust me – I know those users well, who never do a single thing to cause the problems on their PCs, and expect me to jump in and fix the problem. I work a Help Desk. ‘Nuff said.
