Tricky Formatting Problem (2002)

Hey, I just got a question about cell formatting in Excel.
Is it possible to format a currency cell so that the dollar sign ($) is left aligned and the number (eg. 4.50) is right aligned?
I was able to do it using a custom format, however doing it that way, the number of spaces is fixed and the column width increases with more digits in the number area. Any suggestions would be great, thanks,

From Excel 97 Help:
To repeat the next character in the format to fill the column width, include an asterisk (*) in the number format. For example, type 0*- to include enough dashes after a number to fill the cell.

Try formatting as $* #.##. That’s an asterisk followed by a space.

Try formatting the cells as Accounting, this puts the $ sign to the left of the cell and numbers to the right.
