Transferring Windows live mail to Windows 10

I’m not sure if this is the right place for this question as I’m new to Askwoody.  I bought my mother a new Windows 10 laptop but I ‘m having trouble getting her email set up.  She was using Windows live mail on her Windows 7 computer.  When I click the mail icon on the new Windows 10 laptop, it asks if I  want to set up email for Outlook, Gmail, Yahoo, or pop3/imap.  I clicked pop3/imap.  It asks you to enter email address, name you want to use, and password.  I entered all that and got the wonderfully helpful “error code 0x80004005”  If I had been talking to an actual person, I would have said “could you be more vague please?”  Any suggestions?   I think the computer is using Windows 10 1809.  TIA.

I’m pretty sure all xxxx.livecom accounts come under OUTLOOK.com control . Same as Hotmail accounts.

True.  Outlook.com manages all hotmail.com, msn.com, live.com and some personal domains set up through Outlook services.  They just rolled everyone under one cloud.

It’s her @wi.rr.com email.  I actually thought she was using Outlook, but when I looked at her computer, I saw Office wasn’t even installed.  Would an incorrect password generate this error message?

Is it feasible to keep using Windows Live Mail – it’s been out of support for ages.

No.  Windows Live Mail was a horrible program, mostly because the Office team didn’t want a real alternative to Outlook. It didn’t even play smart with Hotmail (sigh).

Yes it is – I have a friend successfully doing so.  It may be hard to find the program to install it, I downloaded it from somewhere in case his gets messed up, but have yet to test the installer.

It may be a corruption issue. Try these commands from a “Command Prompt as Admin”.

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
sfc /scannow

It did find corrupt files and repaired them but I still get the error message.  I’d be fine bypassing Windows mail altogether and have her use Gmail or Thunderbird.  I just don’t know how to move her current inbox into Gmail or Thunderbird.

Try these things to fix the mail app.

Go to Settings > Apps > Mail and Calendar > Advanced Options. Are the app permissions OK?

Scroll down and click Reset. Add the mail settings again. Any good?

Reset, then uninstall and reinstall.

All the permissions were on except location so I turned it to the on position.  I reset, rebooted and tried again with no luck.  Under Mail and Calendar I clicked uninstall and nothing happened.  If I go under Mail and Calendar – Advanced Options, uninstall is grayed out.  Would an incorrect password cause this error or would it say “incorrect password”

Maybe you need to be an admin user to uninstall?

Sorry Paul.  I forgot to log in before replying to your post so it’s listed as anonymous and awaiting review.  Basically, I exported mom’s email with Windows live mail just to see what format it used.  It saves each email as .eml which can be imported into Mozilla Thunderbird so, if all else fails, I can go that route.  I’m going to try to uninstall the Mail app but it’s an administrator account I’m working out of so I’m not holding my breath
