To start the ball rolling.

MarkJ suggested (in Lounge Matters) http://www.w3schools.com[/url%5D as a good site for training. It is a ite I have used before, and learnt a lot from.

But it does not (on the surface) cover .NET

Are there other sites which do?

Or are there books which cover the topic better?

I second Mark’s Yippee!!

And I can recommend a good .NET book. It’s called “Code Notes for VB.NET”, 2001, edited by Gregory Brill, published by Random House. It’s targeted to VB programmers but it gives a great overview of .NET in general.

It’s a fairly quick but pithy read, and a great place to start before plowing into one of those 10-pound Wrox books…

I currently have 2 ASP.NET books. They are both great…although, I’m finding that my clients still need a lot more traditional ASP written. Unfortunately I’m going to have to let them collect dust until .NET gains momentum in the market…

I’ve done quite a bit of book shopping on Amazon – I looked at over 300 ASP and ASP.NET books last weekend!

One good and bad thing about .NET is that the CLR supports so many different languages. This makes shopping for books a little more difficult. You have to be careful to locate one that has examples written in the language of your choice. (My background is VB)

The first is ASP.NET Database Programming Weekend Crash Course by Hungry Minds press. This is a really great book for learning the basics. The examples are all in Visual Basic. The only boring thing for me is that they start from scratch on general database concepts – which I’ve already conqured. But overall, this is a great book to help you dive into ASP.NET over a weekend (30 sessions of 30 minutes each).

The second is ASP.NET Unleashed by Sams Publishing. This is a very handy reference guide with great in-depth examples.

The folks who publish Microsoft Office Solutions Magazine have favored me with a few free issues of asp.netPRO, which has its online counterpart at http://www.aspnetPRO.com[/url%5D. While many of the articles are interesting, a few presume a bit too much knowledge. Still, I guess you don’t learn if you don’t stretch. Right now, there is zero reason for me to learn the new ADO.NET or ASP.NET, but it’s helpful to know what’s around the bend for the future.

I’m going to the “.NET Solutions Summit to Secure your Enterprise Applications Seminar” that MS is doing in several cities (some already done). It’s focussed on security issues, but should provide some good insight into how .NET is going to shape up.

I’m attending tomorrow and Wednesday (6/11-12/2002) in Dallas, and I’ll post a review here. If anyone is interested in the details, let me know and I’ll forward or post the email we received announcing the event (if that’s okay with the mod, since it is advertising of sorts). There are three more dates listed in the announcement.
