Track Changes (XP under W2K)

We have a document that has been built by bringing in chunks from a whole bunch of sources. We have been cheerfully using track changes to bring the whole thing together. It is only now that we have noticed that the document always opens with track changes switched on, and we cannot find a way to stop this. All the changes have been accepted or rejected, there are no outstanding items. The random sample of other documents I have opened all open normally with track changes off.

Anyone know where we may look to stop the document opening with track changes on?

Have you made sure that the Track Changes button on the Reviewing toolbar is off (it’s on in the screenshot below)

thanks for leaping in.

Certainly have! and when we save the document with it off, it still opens with it on. I have just tried creating a version of the document by running the “remove hidden data” tool. The resulting file seems to be free of the problem, but we dont really want to loose some of the change history. Anyway, we have a workaround, but would still like to know what has been going on.

If you lose data by using the ‘remove hidden data’ then try to save the file out to XML format and then reopen that file. You may find this strips the recurring tracking without losing the information you wanted to keep.

thank you for this idea. In fact using the rhd tool has stripped enough from the file to make it work while retaining all the paragraph styles etc. (though lost any change history). Interestingly though, this file (the stripped one) has passed to several computers running XP, 2003, and in one case Vista. The Table of contents is entirely unpredictable, that is sometimes it is right, sometimes it stays with all the entries on a single random page. Since we cant guarantee that whoever receives it will want to bother / be able to run an update this is very difficult for us.

I want to jump in here to comment on the problem you mentioned where all the entries of the TOC display a single random page number. This has been a recurring problem for our office so frequently that I have resorted to inserting the following AutoOpen macro into every document I edit (we are using Word 2003 SP2). This macro update all the fields, then positions the insertion point at the beginning of the document.

thank you very much for this. I had got round to the idea of a macro and lo and behold you have given me one.

What I dont quite understand is why these issues are allowed to fester. They do so undermine the confidence and attitude of serious users of this software . Hey ho
