AskWoody LoungerJanuary 31, 2007 at 2:48 pm #1049309In Office 2007 it is not possible to have toolbars. You do have the option to create a user specific ribbon, this can be achieved by creating a Custom.xml file (I believe), you will then be able to create your own ribbon. I would recommend you taking a look on the internet where, hopefully, you will be able to find further information.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 31, 2007 at 3:35 pm #1049323While we can’t replace the ribbons with the old familiar toolbars, Microsoft did include something called the Quick Access Toolbar for users to add things to from ribbons for quicker accessing.
Up to now I’ve pushed a special toolbar to all users with the help of a startup template. In Office 2007, when I add this template to the startup group it shows up on the Add-In ribbon. This is terribly inconvenient for the users because they’re use to having this on top at all times and they access custom macros on it numerous times throughout the day. I’m thinking maybe I can add the custom macros from my startup template to this Quick Access Toolbar. I’ll have to play around with it, but I’m wondering if there might be a way to push my custom macros to the Quick Access Toolbar globally like I use to do it with the startup template. Maybe a file location setting in Word? Maybe there’s a way using a group policy?

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 1, 2007 at 6:06 am #1049454I don’t have any experience yet with Office 2007, but am planning to install on one PC to test our dozens of templates later this year. This toolbar issue really worries me, because we have a lot of dot files with template-specific toolbars, showing only if a doc based on that template is created/opened, giving users access to template-specific functionality. So I hope that the issue is only with application-wide/add-in toolbars. If these template-specific toolbars also don’t show, then we would be in big trouble, I think, and a reason for not updating from 2003 to 2007.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 1, 2007 at 3:43 pm #1049515I put Vista and Office 2007 on the firm’s 2nd laptop but had to send it with the firm admin to Australia in late December when the 1st laptop was in use. I’m still waiting to get it back from her so I can test these theories. We also have a couple dot templates that have their own special toolbars that only come up when the template is in use. I want to say when I tested them that their special toolbar showed up under the Add-In ribbon; not as a toolbar as we’ve known it. During the holiday break, I went through and converted those templates over to tab thru fill-in field doc forms. I have a backup of them before the conversion I can test for you, if you wish. Years back I moved the fast majority of special macros to a single startup toolbar. It centralized the macro system for me. But if I can’t find a way to at least get that part figured out some how, then we’re up a creek. My users have come to depend on it for just about everything they do in their documents. I’ll post again when I get the laptop back and can do some more testing.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 2, 2007 at 6:38 am #1049616We have those template-specific toolbars sitting just above the status bar, to make the distinction with global toolbars (Word’s own and custom) better visible for our users. This has been the case since 1998, when we switched from WordPerfect to Word 97. And it’s taught in workshops, so they’re used to it and they like it.
I’ll be grateful if you put it to the test. I cannot do this myself because there’s no PC with Office 2007 available and won’t be for a couple of months.
Thanks Daisy. -

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 5, 2007 at 10:26 am #1050007I have been involved with the Office 2007 TAP and also requested training around the ribbons/toolbar issue that we all feel will cause some problems. Basically I was told by a Microsoft consultant that if you have a toolbar that changes depending on which template opens this will not be available in Office 2007. Something you may also want to think about is any kind of branding you have in place. As 2007 is “user friendly” and formatting etc is available at the flick of a switch, with very little thinking from the user, the whole look and feel can be changed in an instant !!! (Great news !!).
I have installed a toolbar (dot file) which does appear on an Add-In tab but as Daisy mentioned it’s definitely not ideal and will frustrate users. I fear some significant development is on the cards – well always good to be challenged !!

[/indent]Thanks for the input Jack.
What we have here are template-specific toolbars that are saved within that template, not a global toolbar that changes depending on which template opens.
We do try to maintain a house style with our company templates, which are protected for forms. I guess I’ll have to wait ’till I get a chance to test it, or maybe Daisy comes up with the answer after testing.
