I have searched and read all the threads about toolbars here and none of them solved the problem.

I had to reload OP and copy the info from my old computer because the tech could not do a “ghost” to the new one. The excel8.xlb and Flynn8.xlb files are in c:windows. If I click on them, they load the toolbar which was previously customized. But it will not save changes I try to make. This error message
The file could not be accessed. Try one of the following:
*Make sure the specified folder exists.
*Make sure the folder that contains the files is not read-only.
*Make sure the file name does not contain any of the following characters; ?[]:*
*Make sure the file/path name doesn’t contain more than 218 characters.
shows up. I do not have an alternate start folder named. I have set to share in case it isn’t recognizing me as a user any more. I don’t believe that any of my file names include restricted characters or are too long. But I don’t know what file or folder this warning is referring to. Workbooks save in MyDdocuments ok, including changes to macros in Personal. I didn’t know I could make folders read only, so I don’t think I have done that.

Just another trivial problem that is driving me to distraction.

Are you trying to save that file after you double click on it to open it? If so, I do not think that you can do that.

If you double click on one of those files, it should become the active file where your toolbar customizations are kept. If you then exit from Excel and start it back up, all of those customizations should be there, and any new ones that you make should be saved automatically into the file.

nope I am with you up to the saved automatically into the file. But no matter how I opened Excel (and I do get the old settings when I click the .xlb file itself) if I make any changes to the toolbars I get the message quoted above. I have tried removing the .xlb files completely. Tried various combinations of my name because this is a new install maybe it can’t figure out who I am. Saving does work on the workbooks themselves but not on the Excel customizing changes.

Oh well I am trying to use the keyboard more and the mouse less anyway. And I was only going to put somethings back that I had taken off to make it smaller. Now I that I found the ^7 shortcut to hide it I don’t care how crowded it gets.

Tx anyway

There isn’t any other file or folder it might be referring to is there? The windows folder and the documents folder are not read only.

I think that you would get that message if you make any changes to the toolbar while the .xlb file is open. So, if you double click on the .xlb file and then try to make any toolbar changes, you would get that message. If you always get that message, is there a chance that you put the .xlb file into your XLSTART directory?
