I have put together a rather large workbook, with about 50 sheets, for structural design of buildings. Yesterday, I had the bright idea of adding some colour to improve the readability, and so I formatted many many cells.
Then I got an error message: “Too many different cell formats”, so I guess I reached the limit.
What’s the solution ? I split off several sheets to another file, but the message recurs. Maybe I need to divide the file into several smaller ones.

Yo’ll have to simplify the formatting in the workbook, for example reduce the number of custom number formats. See MSKB article You receive a “Too many different cell formats” error message in Excel and the thread starting at post 437,998.

One thing to start with is to save the file as web page and then reload the file and save-as normal Excel workbook. That at least gets rid of the no longer used styles and number formats.

Make sure you use a different name when you do the save-as, so as not to loose your original…

        Thanks Hans and Jan,
I eliminated a few unused formats using the code in the mentioned thread, and I saved as htm file. I am waiting for it to save as xls at the moment.
If I still have trouble, I will try to uniformise the formats.

        Thanks a lot.
