    Hello,

I am creating a master table of contents in a document. Within that master table contents, there is a link for a chapter that has its own mini-table of contents. That mini-table of contents is based not on table-entry fields, but rather, on styles (heading 1 = TOC level 1, etc.).

The problem is that when I press F9 to update this latter TOC, I am getting all of the headings from other parts of the document in there as well. I want to keep those out.

I know how to solve this problem using table entry fields. You just designate each entry with a letter and when you insert the TOC, you can indicate that you want the TOC to correspond with the appropriate letter.

But how do I get around this problem using styles? Can I get around it?

    Sincerely,

    JMT

If you want to use styles, you’ll have to design a set of styles that is used exclusively for the paragraphs that should end up in the mini-TOC, and nowhere else in the document.

      You can do this with styles by using a bookmark to define the area where your TOC draws its entries. Basically you select the chapter for the mini-toc and assign it a bookmark name eg Chap1. Then the TOC field needs to look something like this { toc b Chap1 o “1-3” }

post 602,833 by Hans should give you the clues on how to do this.

        Hi all,

I am not sure how to bookmark a section of the document. Hans wrote, “- Create a bookmark for each chapter (i.e. a bookmark Chapter1 containing the entire text of chapter 1, a bookmark Chapter 2 containing the entire text of chapter 2, etc.),” but I still don’t know how to go about doing so.

In the attached document, you can see that entries from the second mini-talb eof contents are finding their ways into the first mini-table of contents and vice versa. They need to be kept separate. How can that be done?

        Sincerely,

        JMT

          Do it as follows:
          – Click at the chart of a “chapter” (at its title).
          – Scroll down to the end of the “chapter”.
          – Shift+click at the end of the “chapter” (just above the title of the next “chapter”).
          – The entire text of the “chapter” should now be selected.
          – Select Insert | Bookmark…
          – Enter a meaningfule name for the bookmark, e.g. Article1 or Constitution. The name may not contain spaces.
          – Click OK.
          – Use this bookmark name in the b switch of the TOC field of each “chapter”.
          – Repeat for each “chapter”.

            Dear Hans,

So would my TOC code (where the name of my “Chapter” is “Constitution”) be TOC o “1-2” b Constitution h z u instead of TOC O “1-2” H Z U ?

            Sincerely,

            JMT
