Dear Loungers,

Does anyone know how to get level two in the attached TOC to line up?

Make sure you display the ruler.

1) Click in the first line of the TOC.
Drag the “Hanging indent” triangle from the initial position to approximately the position of the left-aligned tab. Take care not to drag the “Left indent” rectangle.
Drag the left-aligned tab off the ruler.

2) Click in the second line of the TOC.
Drag the left-aligned tab off the ruler (it’ll come back but that doesn’t matter)
Drag the “Left indent” rectangle to the position of the hanging indent of the first line. The “Hanging indent” and “First-line indent” will move with it.
Drag the “Hanging indent” triangle from the initial position to approximately the position of the left-aligned tab. Take care not to drag the “Left indent” rectangle.
Drag the left-aligned tab off the ruler.

Change the “TAB” on the two lines that you want moved.

Thanks, Hans. It worked, although I got confused somewhere in there and didn’t end up totally following the instructions, but still a good result.

In this second attached document, however, when I follow your instructions for TOC 1, although I get a good result, after I close and reopen the document, all the numbers are no longer right aligned. You can see it for yourself. Then when I press F9, it makes the numbers right aligned, but then the tabs are all disaligned (it just goes back to the original configuration). What is wrong here?

It works OK for me in this document, also after saving, closing and reopening. I have attached the document, with the changes to the ruler as suggested. What happens if you open it?

Hello Hans,

I opened this document and I am having the same issue. First, when I open it, the tabs are lined up like they should be, but the numbers are not aligned all the way to the right and they don’t have tab leaders. Then I press F9 to update the entire TOC and the numbers go to the right and there are tab leaders, but then the tab gets disaligned (“filler filler” gets shifted over a tab to the right under III and IV).

I have no idea. I re-downloaded the document from my previous reply and opened it. The screenshot below shows what I see (the dotted lines are the text margins).

And after you get the result you want–using either of the methods suggested–update the TOC 2 style so that your change will stick when you regenerate the TOC. I do this from the Wondows 2003 & 2007 Styles task pane like so: with my cursor on a properly formatted paragraph, I click the arrow to the right of style TOC 2 and select Update to match selection.

BTW, what you did in modifying the TOC2 style was the right approach, but you must have accidentally deleted the right-align tab (at 6.49″). That’s why the numbers no longer aligned. So yet another approach is to put that tab back in –& for good measure, clear the automatically update box in the modify style dialog.

I always modify my styles if I want them changed; I never let them automatically update. I did change the tabs in your TOC 2 style — modified the style (first had to clear all tabs because it looked like you had conflicting ones set — nothing showing up in the space for tabs but “clear all tabs” button was available). I’ve attached the modified file.

If you take the Automatic Update feature of these styles off, you can still change styles by manipulating text right on the page — all you have to do is go to Tools/Options/Edit and select “Prompt to update style”. Now when you change a paragraph in your doc and you know you want to change the corresponding style, click on the style name in the style window (style name should highlight), press Enter on your keyboard, and you’ll get a short menu giving you the option to update the style to reflect recent changes.

Thanks for your messages, all, but I just had a breakthrough: you can modify the TOC styles just like you modify any other style. It never occurred to me how simple this was until now. So now, I just go right into the Format/Styles dialogue box and adjust the tabs and enter them into the template and it is no problem.
