I’m trying to do a TOC (and trying and trying) using some TC fields. In the online help it says to position the TC field immediately before the text I want included in the contents. That text is contained in a header and no matter what I try I cannot get the TOC to include the information. Can anyone figure out what I might be doing wrong?
    Thanks

I’m sorry, Jeanne. Word will not include items from the Header or Footer in a TOC.

Is the text contained in the document header or in a heading paragraph. (It’s been my experience that sometimes the term header is misused.) If it’s in a heading paragraph, try selecting the text you want to include in the TOC rather than just positioning your cursor before the text. Then do Alt/Shift/O (that’s the letter O, not zero) to open the Mark Table of Contents Entry dialog box. Select the appropriate level and click on Mark.

      Just checking, Jeanne…

Are you trying to use TC fields because you don’t want to use heading styles to automatically generate your TOC?

If the paragraphs that you want in your TOC are in heading styles, you can generate the TOC automatically. (Still won’t be able to include information in a header, though, since information in headers and footers is both in every page and in no page.)

See Complex Documents(addbalance.com/usersguide/complex_documents.htm) for information on setting up tables of contents.

For the lowdown on headers and footers take a look at Sections, Section Breaks, Headers and Footers.
