TOC in Word

I have a document with a TOC with a series of chapter names called “Level 1.” In the TOC, I have included the following text:
t “Level 1,1, heading 2,3”

I created the document on my home computer using Word 2003. When I update the TOC, it works just fine.

However, when I work on it on my work computer using Word 2007, whenever I update the TOC, Level 1 and Heading 2 disappear from the TOC.

I think I created Level 1 as a style in my template. Heading 2 was there originally.

You might want to verify this but style names are usually case sensitive – Heading 1 is different to heading 1.
I would also remove the space in front of heading 1 in your TOC field. I don’t know that it has any effect but I avoid the ambiguity when possible.

If that doesn’t solve the Heading 2 problem then we might need to see your document.

I assume that your Level 1 and Heading 2 content is not placed in text boxes or frames – if they are then that is potentially the problem.

Andrew, I don’t think those are the issues because the TOC code works fine in Word 2003. it is only when I am updating the TOC in Word 2007 that the interface does not recognize the Level 1 and Heading 2 style names in my code.

If you post a cut down document so we can see the problem then we may be able to solve it. I can’t think of a good reason why it is not working for you but if I can see the file then it should be readily apparent.

You don’t also have a b switch in the TOC field do you?

Andrew, there is no b switch. Here is the document. In Word 2003, it updates fine. In Word 2007, Level 1 and Heading 2 disappear.

I am currently using Word 2010 Beta and it works fine there. I will be able to test it on a Word 2007 machine later today.

Have you tried adding a space in front of the t switch? I don’t know whether this is the problem in ’07 but it might be.

I have Word 2007 and was able to update the TOC on the example you posted with no problem — nothing disappeared. Although I did notice on opening the document that Chapter 1 appears in the TOC as “CHAPTER” with no number — was that intended?

Not sure what all this means, but it seems to eliminate Word 2007 as the culprit. It also seems to eliminate funky style(s) as an issue, and corruption in the document as an issue… unless it was in one of the parts you excised. Hmmmm.
