I use a numbered outline style for all my section headings (1.0, 1.1, 1.1.1, 2.0, etc.). Each lower level indents the way it should. Now I’d like to create a Table of Contents specifying this style as the one to use to generate the TOC (all headings with this style will be included in the TOC). I get all the entries in the TOC fine, but I loose the indentation (in the TOC) for the lower levels.

Is there any way to retain the outline’s indentations in the TOC when the TOC is based on just one (outline) style?

    Thanks.

      Hi bushaw.

As far as my understanding goes, generating a TOC creates a “link” between the Heading Style (where your outline is, presumably) and the corresponding TOC style. However, they are different styles, so you’d need to format your TOC styles separately from your Heading styles. I could be wrong, but in my experience that is always how we’ve handled that…

        klyjen,

My TOC styles (TOC 1, TOC 2, …) have different indents, but my TOC is all left-justified. I suspect this it because my one outline numbered heading style is “linked” to the unindented TOC 1 style. I can go into the TOC and manually change selected entries to the TOC style that matches the level of indentation I want (to match the outline numbered style), but when I update the whole TOC, it resets the styles back to TOC 1, which is an annoyance.

Am I missing some setting somewhere or is there no way for the TOC to “inherit” the indents of an outline numbered style?

Are you using a different Heading style (Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.) for each numbering level?

Are you using a different heading style for each level of your outline? In other words, is each level of your outline attached to the corresponding heading level?

Okay, I think I get it now. Thanks for the hints!

I was trying to use just one style (which works fine for the numbered outline headings themselves). I switched to a separate style (based on your hint) for each level and then linked each of those styles to the outline level and to the TOC style for that level. That does the trick! If I want to change the way my headings look, I change the corresponding heading style. If I want to change the way the heading looks in the TOC, I change the corresponding TOC style (TOC 1, TOC 2, etc.). Lots of styles to take care of, but I guess you need them all to take care of everything.

            Thanks again.
