This question is so basic I’m ashamed to ask it. I have just re-loaded Vista and want to create the desktop shortcut “My Computer” (I know, “Computer” in Vista). Can someone tell this idiot How?

(Edited by DaveA on 03-Jul-08 13:52. Added note about Vista)

All you need to do is Right click the “Computer” entry in the Start menu and select “Show of Desk top”.
Top remove this icon, then all one needs to do the same but the next click will remove the check mark and you will not see the icon on the desktop any more.
This can be done the same way for MOST of the entries for the listing on the right side of the Start Menu.

This is the same way in XP.

Edited by HansV to reduce screenshot in size – pleas don’t post pictures larger than 640×480 pixels

You can also display/not display “Computer”, “Recycle Bin”, etc., by right-clicking on your Desktop and choose “Personalize”. On the top left you will see a link for “Change desktop icons”. In the resulting “Desktop Icon Settings” you can simply put a check beside the box for whatever shortcut icon you desire which will be displayed on your Desktop.

Right click your desktop, and select “View”, and then scroll down to “Show Desktop Icons”. If this is NOT checked then the icon have been turned OFF. Make sure that there is a check mark there.

Now this idiot know of three features of Vista I’d never seen before. (And I’ve been using Windows since Version 1; I’ve been using computers since the early 1960s.)

        Thank you one and all.

Are you saying that the icons are now appearing on the desk top?
If so, which item solved the issue and how many Icons did you end up having on the desktop? smile

            DavdA,
Displaying or not displaying all icons (controlled by the desktop’s View setting) was never an issue. I simply did not know how to turn on the Computer shortcut icon. Of the two solutions described for me earlier in this conversion (Start, Computer, Show on Desktop. and Desktop Personalize, Change desktop Icons, select Computer check box). Both are equally valid, although the latter technique has more power. I shall try to remember both techniques. I thank you again for the information.
