Anyone know what process writes the ~DF*.tmp files in the Temp directory?

I was saving a form in Access, and the process just went on and on, with alot of disk activity. It went on much longer than usual, and I finally got an “out of disk space” error. After much searching, I finally found this 1.8GB tmp file, which had used up all my space!

Just strange.

No idea at all what that might be. Is this a one-off occurrence or has it happened before?

So far it is a one-shot occurance. I see that there are other .tmp files that begin with ~DF, but for the most part they are small (<60KB). The only thing I can guess is that there might have been some sort of corruption in the database which caused it to get into some sort of loop while it was trying to save the open form. That makes as much sense as anything else I can think of.

Hi Mark:
I don’t know about Access, but Word uses temp files, & if Word crashes, they aren’t deleted. But I would guess that Access must do something similar because I’ve never seen a Word temp file that big. In Word, as you edit, a temp file is written. When you save the changes, it’s merged with the original file & the temp file is renamed to the original. An explanation for Word is found at MSKB 211632.

Access does the same thing when it compacts a database, and like Word it puts the temp file in the same directory as the original file. This one was in the Temp directory, make authorship unclear.
