Looking for a free time zone converter that can be displayed on the desktop (preferably taking a small space on the desktop or in the tray). I checked out a large number of possibilities through Google, but they either require linking to a site and filling in the information each time (which I’d rather avoid), “free” downloads that require payment after a trial use, and other limitations. Another “wish” is one that will show 12 hr. am/pm rather than UCT or GMT because relatives who can’t “translate” the time need the information. We need to know time conversion from various time zones in the USA and Afghanistan, where my son has recently been deployed for 6 months. If anyone knows of or has had experience with such a program, kindly let me know.

      Try SymmTime.

WorldTime is the one I use.
It has many, many options and configurations.
The attachment shows a minimal view.
I suggest version 5 as their version 6 is not complete and is not stable.

      Cheers
      Ken

        Ken,

Thanks for the link. I’m a bit puzzled though since version 5.5 is dated March 2000, and version 6 is Feb. 2004. It seems that no one has done anything with version 6 after 5 years.

          Uh huh.
It’s been a while, but it’s still worth trying.
It can be configured in so many ways that is might take a bit of experimenting to get the display you want.
Then again, if you are like me, that’s the fun part of an application like this.
          See edited clock format below.

          Cheers,
          Ken

Thanks. I’ll take a look at it. Right now I’m trying out DocWatson’s link to SymmTime. We’ll see how that works.

      (Edited by JohnBF on 11-Feb-09 09:24. )

See also MS’s Time Zone Tray widget, mentioned in this thread, which I use. IIRC, it has a five zone maximum.

EDIT: it may be that I’m using this one: MS Time Zone. It’s been a while!

If you use Firefox, there is a great timezone add-on called FoxClocks. It runs as an icon in the status bar and you can easily setup the cities you want to show time for. Just brush over the icon and the list pops up.

        I don’t use Firefox. sorry

Also, I had previously found timeanddate.com, but it requires linking to a web site, which is what I wanted to avoid. So far, Symmtime seems to be doing the job. And when I tried to download KenBF’s link to Microsoft Time Zone, it failed–3 times. That failure is a puzzlement. I’ll have to check into it when I get some time.

The MS time zone download is for XP & Win2003 only. If you have Vista it is builtin to display up to 3 clocks.

My best friend’s son just spent a year in Japan as a High School exchange student and both he and his son used SymmTime to track the time differential. I’ve been using it for about 3 years to keep track of another friend who travels for a defense contractor and is all over the world, all the time. Simple to add another clock or city to the mix.

Glad it’s working out for you. smile

Thanks for the link to FoxClocks. That’s really slick!

I don’t have frequent enough need to have time zones displayed all the time, even on the task bar. But, as has been mentioned, I too use the WorldTimeAndDate version, (post 758,609) have it bookmarked and set to display the time for eight places I usually refer to here in The Lounge.
