Now that busy season is over for me, I’ll be doing some long overdue upgrade projects. At the office I’ll be planning on upgrading my Windows 11 22H2

We run OpenWRT firmware, and get notifications from them when there is an update.

Even then, we wait a couple of weeks to see if there is any smoke that needs to clear before we go forward.

Do you check for updates on your wifi/routers? Yes.

Do you turn on automatic updates? No, and I never do that.

Do you check them for firmware updates on a regular basis? Yes.

I consider automatic updates on any device to be potential causes for (serious) problems. I will never enable automatic updates on ANY device, be it Windows, MacOS, iOS and other devices such as routers.

Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst.

We have an Orbi RBR20 mesh wifi router with 2 satellites, have had them for 5 years or so, do check every 6 months to make sure the firmware is up-to-date, or update it.

I use a MikroTik router, on which the firmware can be manually or auto-updated, and/or the firmware can be downloaded from the manufacturer’s webside to a router-attached PC and restored from there. The router is set to NOT auto-update, and is checked for updates weekly – or so – while always making sure that there are a copies of past/current router firmware versions on a PC before updating.

Over the years, the MikroTik router and its firmware have been utterly reliable. If memory serves, the unit functioned well enough “out of the box”, but the granularity of the setup can be intimidating to this faint-of-heart home user… Fortunately there is a helpful user forum available on-line.

      No automatic updates here.

I have to ask: why TP-Link?  Any review that recommends them is focused on speed, speed and speed. I prefer to focus on security where they do not do well.  For example, this article

      https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/multiple-botnets-exploiting-one-year-old-tp-link-flaw-to-hack-routers/

is about a bug in the Archer AX21 router that was fixed about a year ago. The important point here is that TP-Link only fixed the one model with the reported bug. Is the same flaw in any of their 43 other routers? They don’t say. How likely is it that one device of theirs had a bug that none of their other devices shared?

SNBForums is my go to for keeping up to date with router updates. Plenty of folks there know a lot more about the subject than I do. One or more of them will post when a new update is available. I wait until there is a consensus among these folks on whether or not it is safe to proceed with installing them. They also are a great resource for troubleshooting all kinds of issues relating to routers.
