Why does the Time (as showen in the task bar) not stay correct? It only take a few weeks and it can be off by more than 30 mins. ??

    Thank you

There are a few possible causes for this happening.

      • Your system BIOS has a weak battery and is not keeping the RTC (Real-Time Clock) accurate.
      • You have some type of time synchronization program and it’s misbehaving.[/list]Does this happen after a reboot, or is it a gradual process of losing the time? Do you reboot often (I leave my systems on 24-7)? The time is set to the BIOS time at each boot, so if the RTC is losing time, then your system will exhibit the same behavior.

On every PC that I maintain or own with a net connection, I prefer to use a small, unobtrusive program called AboutTime. I’ve been using it for several years and never ever had a problem with it. It’s small, efficient, and configurable. It may be worth looking into.

Thanks, I will be trying AboutTime,
I thing It is gradual. But maybe after reboot. I leave on 24-7 but of course have to re-boot from time to time. Its a Compaq 5000 with windows ME

        Thanks for your reply.

        cool

I’m not picking on you – I’m picking on Windows ME – but of course you have to reboot from time to time! laugh

In all seriousness, that makes it sound like the RTC in your system is slowly losing time. Windows grabs the time from the BIOS at startup, and then uses its own internal algorithm to maintain it, which is far more accurate. But one reboot, and pow! You’re sliding into the past.

It may not be a bad idea to replace the CMOS battery if you feel froggy. I don’t know how old the system itself is and the batteries usually last for quite some time, but you just never know.

          All the best,
