• Thunderbird will not install

I want to install Thunderbird on my Windows 7 64-bit laptop. I downloaded the program and initiated the install process. The extraction process completed and then … nothing! No msiexec process was running, no Thunderbird process was running. It was as if I had done nothing at all. I tried performing the install with my antivirus disabled and disconnected from my home network. Again, nothing.

I was able to install the program just fine on my wife’s Win 7 64-bit laptop, so there is something about my laptop the program doesn’t like. We are both administrators on our own machines. Any hints or tips would be appreciated.

    Many thanks,

    David

Chances are the following is irrelevant, but I’m posting it just in case. I’ve been using TB for quite a long time. Recently, it wouldn’t open. I’d click on one of the icons that starts it, and nothing would happen, apparently. This was independent of AV, of rebooting, or anything I could think of. Stunned me. So, I searched on the internet and found instances of such behavior. What I wound up doing was to use Windows Task Manager, and look at it carefully while I clicked on a TB shortcut. I saw sysfader.exe flash on for an instant, then it was gone. Sysfader has caused some people various errors. So, I went to Ctrl Panel and got rid of it. Then went to Safe Mode (this step might have been unnecessary, but I wanted to give the system every chance) and started TB. After that, TB would always start normally, as it had been from time immemorial.
My take from that is, it’s possible that the same kind of interferences might apply during some installations. Sysfader, together with any other items that have kept TB from opening for some people, is a candidate for causing the problem. I don’t know what sysfader is exactly, and why it (or whatever) should suddenly have generated a sticky, perseverating problem for me, as it seems to have during that episode.
[For getting rid of sysfader, I rt clicked on My Computer, Properties, Performance, Settings, Visual Effects, and unchecked “Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing”, “Fade or slide menus into view”, “Fade of slide ToolTips into view” and I would have done so for “Fade out menu items after clicking” if it had been listed. I was just following an Rx I found on the web.] So, if the foregoing has any relevance, I see it as the idea of hunting for unnecessary processes that might have tripped the program up, and might be found among the postings about TB not opening. As I said, this might all be a low-yield idea. I have no way of knowing. The whole experience of TB suddenly and insistently not starting, was unpleasantly weird.
