Thunderbird to Yahoo connecton

I have a friend who just got a new Samsung notebook running Windows 7 basic. He wanted an email client other than MS OE. I suggested Thunderbird and tried to set it up for him. Got it installed, but can’t get it to connect to his email host (ATT/Yahoo). We keep getting a message that the username/password do not match. Verified that we have the correct name and password, but nothing seems to work.

Any ideas?

Does he have a “premium” Yahoo account? You cannot access the standard (free) Yahoo account.

It would be one of their Mail Plus account

What version of T’bird did you install?
For “User Name” use the entire email address, ‘name@yahoo.com”.

Thanks everyone. It was the latest version of Thunderbird, and we tried both the entire email address and just the name part. Just before we stopeed trying different combinations, I did see a reference to ‘Mail Plus’ on the Yahoo site, but I didn’t have time to chase it down. He does not have a premium account so that’s the answer. He can log in thru web mail and that will have to suffice until he decides what he wants to pay for.

He wouldn’t have been able to use OE either in that case.

He should be able to get one or more free e-mail accounts from his ISP (ATT?).

There is an add-on for Thunderbird called Web-Mail get it here, http://webmail.mozdev.org/installation.html. You will need to load the main application and the Yahoo mail extension. I’ve been using this for a couple of years with only a few sign-in problems at times. They are usually fixed with an update to the program.

I used to use ypops but when that didn’t work so well I switched to freepops which is a background program to download email from most of the web based email providers.
