..Thunderbird loses users each day to rich ecosystems that are both clients and services, such as Gmail and Office365. These ecosystems have both hard vendor lock-ins (through interoperability issues with 3rd-pary clients) and soft lock-ins (through convenience and integration between their clients and services)

It is our goal to eventually have a similar offering so that a 100% open source, freedom-respecting alternative ecosystem is available for those who want it…

TL;DR  We are providing online services, mail, file share etc. Maybe we can make money this way?

tbird is in trouble indeed.  after detailed evaluation of 5 free email clients, i selected tbird to replace my sun-setted outlook express.  as of last 2 weeks ago, imap sync was not working with hotmail accounts.  however tbird sync continues to sync successfully with gmail and yahoo-mail, and even proton-mail.  is tbird in the cross-hair ?

You have not configured TB correctly to use Hotmail. Nothing else going on here.
