I don’t have home internet so reading emails at home is a major pain. The solution: I got a hotmail account and linked it to Thunderbird. The problem: My school blocks the only working outgoing port (587) so I can’t send email from Thunderbird while at school (I can still log into hotmail.com but, then I lose my address book and it takes a lot longer, and I lose the familiar interface). My public library not only blocks 587 but also 993 and 995 my two incoming ports.

I’ve asked and it seems impossible to get them to unblock the ports and my school told me to use port 25 but, I found that port 25 if not blocked by the establishment is often times blocked by the Wireless router (hard wired in) or the ISP. What I’m looking for is some secure way of getting around this issue, perhaps a proxy service of some sort that can change my ports after the ISP. If anyone has any ideas I’m sure that others will get use out of this as well.

I recently found a way around the blocked ports. It’s an advanced Proxy program/service call Your Freedom (http://www.your-freedom.net/). The free version has a lot of limits on it but, considering my situation I don’t think I’ll exceed those limits. The program also gets passed some of the p2p blocks.
