A couple of days ago I posted (see below) to the Mozilla Thunderbird forum, about this apparent, disappointing, new deficiency in Thunderbird 5. No reply, so chances are this is real:
    ======= How I put it: ===
Am I missing something? The status bar at the bottom of the inbox always used to show how many messages were downloading or not yet downloaded. This was very useful. I just upgraded to TB 5, and I don’t see this feature.
    ??
    Thanks.

    Any comments?

It seems Thunderbird 5 is having real issues. (read any of the recent posts pertaining to Thunderbird) Many have rolled back to an earlier version.

I tried it and found it very buggy and went back to V3.

Uninstalling it also gave me big problems and then had big problems re-installing Ver. 3..

A search on their forums show many unhappy Ver. 5 users….

Well, I’m constantly looking for a decent email program because I have never been happy with TB. It’s good but I really liked Outlook Express and that was discontinued in Windows 7…

I may try the trial version of Outlook…

Have you tried the email at your ISP? I have Road Runner and use the RR email with WLM (Windows Live Mail) client. I check both of my RRemail accounts and my Hotmail account from WLM. I believe (correct me if I’m wrong) that Thunderbird is also an email client that you can check your email accounts from, not actually an email acccount.

I once tried WLM and didn’t like it..
I don’t like a server somewhere holding all my email.
I prefer to d/l it to my computer and keep what I want on my computer..

There is an option in WLM to delete the messages from the server. This is optional because many users prefer leaving the messages on the server to allow them to be downloaded on another PC at another location.

Hope this helps. Select Options, Email Accounts. Choose the email account you wish to edit and select Properties. In the properties window, Advanced tab set whether to remove messages from server or leave them.

I knew about that feature Ted…
There were just other things about it that I didn’t like.
It’s been awhile since I used it and can’t remember exactly what there was about it I didn’t like..

I still have it installed on my computer so maybe later today I’ll run it and look at a little more closely.

Ted, I was just playing around with WLM and is there a way to import messages from Thunderbird?
I see the options to import from Outlook Express but not Thunderbird.

    • #1290580

I do not see a way of doing this, sorry.

    • #1290582

      You’re right…I checked all over..

Either way, I’m running WLM and playing with it…

It doesn’t allow you to use Identities like in the old Outlook Express…

I also d/l Emailclient trial version so maybe I will install it and see how that is…

It seems every time they put out something new they remove features that everyone liked and used in the older versions…

      I think it’s one big plot…

NOW IT DOES SHOW number of emails to download, and number downloaded!
I have no idea of what made the difference. The version number is still 5.0 precisely,
so it’s not that I’ve absent-mindedly upgraded. I don’t understand it. (And, so far
no one has either confirmed or denied the phenomenon in a forum.)
EDIT: I should have also mentioned that the progress bar is now there for me too.
So, it all looks like the old normal, for the first time since I upgraded to TB 5.

I posted earlier today, about the problem suddenly being gone in my TB5.
I just checked, and it’s gone on my wife’s TB5 as well.
(I have Windows XPH, she has Windows 7.
We both use Sunbelt Vipre for our antimalware program.
For both of us, the problem started immediately after the TB5 update.
We’re both on the same small ISP.
That’s about all I can think of that might have been relevant.)
