Thunderbird 5.0 and missing Windows Secrets e-mails

A couple of days ago Thunderbird did an update to 5.0. Today I looked for old emails from Windows Secrets and could not find a single one.

Every Windows Secrets email has been deleted, even in my archives. As far as I can tell it is only Windows Secrets emails that have disappeared. No one else uses this computer.

Has anyone else experienced the loss of emails when updating to 5.0?

See my post about Thunderbird folders not combining properly in the “Unified Folders” view. Use the “All Folders” view and look through each folder individually, including each year for the Archive. You may not have actually lost anything.

Taking DJG’s advice I went back to Thunderbird and did a more thorough investigation. Some may wonder if I am an idiot :rolleyes:, but in my defense there are some strange behaviors in 5.0. For example, if i click on “From’ the list is alphabetized, but not really. Brian comes after the W’s. Anyhow, I found the missing posts from Windows Secrets.

My big mistake was looking for ‘Windows Secrets’ under ‘From’ when I should have been looking for ‘Brian’. What can I say?

I haven’t updated (I’m using Thunderbird version 3.1.11), and today ALL my archived messages are GONE. This is the first time ever this has happened. Every saved message is gone (from many years past). I can’t find any reason for it, and I can’t find the emails anywhere else. (I have always saved emails in folders that I create and name. This is what I do in Outlook Express as well, and I’m not missing any emails in OE!!)

The only thing different in the last 24 hours is that I installed a wireless router. Could that do it?!?!?

No the router could not be the culprit. It seems Thunderbird is having issues. Do you move them to folders away from Thunderbird, or leave them in folders directly in Thunderbird? Have you searched the way Jambe did? Do you have a recent Image you could restore from to get them back???? (this is probably the best insurance anyone could have against disaster)

I save some emails away from Thunderbird, but mostly inside.

No, I only searched inside Thunderbird, so I decided to REALLY look for them. I do backups once in a while, so I looked for the files that I save when backing up Thunderbird messages (Sent and Inbox). About nine deep on the path, the folder/file names have changed. There is a new folder for “archives” and I did find some files that probably contain my saved emails (but how to get them back, I don’t know). I think what happened is that a few weeks ago I compacted the folders, and that may have changed things. Right now I’m ready to forget about my old emails and if I really care, I’ll try to restore from a backup! But I still don’t know how the saved emails disappeared all at once!

One thing I discovered looking around — I set up a couple of new accounts lately, and when I go to “account settings,” what used to be called “Disk Space” is now “Synchronization and Storage.” FWIW.

I too lost all my local folders in TBird 5, all my emails were still there but all were under “All Mail”. After the loss, just for grins I reestablished a couple of local folders, closed TBird, reopened it and they, too, were gone. Currently just leaving them in “All Mail” hoping the kiddies will float a fix for this crap.

My work email account is through gmail, but gmail lacks various features that I believe that an email client ought to have, so I have set up Thunderbird to work with the gmail account using IMAP. I find gmail preferable to Thunderbird for searching for messages. If you happen to be using gmail with a Thunderbird account, you might consider going this route.

If using Thunderbird with IMAP isn’t an option, Google Desktop (and I assume some of the other Windows desktop search addins) seems to index all my Thunderbird messages, so that can be a useful fallback strategy if you can’t find the messages through T’bird itself.

I believe there might be some confusion here. It is my belief that Thunderbird is an email client (similar to WLM and Eudora) that allows access to various email addresses including web based email, pop based email, email from your ISP, etc. GMail is an actual web based email (similar to Hotmail) with an email address. You can access your GMail through the web site, or through an email client such as Thunderbird or WLM. I don’t believe GMail is an email client.

To set up your Thunderbird as an email client to access your various email addresses you have to go through a separate settup process for each. I tried Thunderbird and opted to stay with WLM, but the 2 are similar in operation. For example I show how I access 3 separate email addresses from my WLM email client.
