Thunderbird recently did its update to 38.0.1 here in my Win7, and then my Win7 froze almost immediately. I spent the next couple of hours trying re-boots and then even uninstalling and re-installing 38.0.1 more than once and while even also removing profiles and everything Thunderbird in my registry during different tries, yet was never able to get Thunderbird working properly. To resolve my problem for now so I can access my various e-mail accounts, I have reverted to 31.7.0: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/latest/win32/en-US/

Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions as to what might have been going on or wrong?

I see this series from my several resets repeated several times:

The previous system shutdown at 10:25:02 AM on ‎6/‎19/‎2015 was unexpected.

The driver DriverWUDFRd failed to load for the device WpdBusEnumRootUMB2&37c186b&0&STORAGE#VOLUME#_??_USBSTOR#DISK&VEN_GENERIC&PROD_STORAGE_DEVICE&REV_9228#03351&0#.

The print spooler failed to share printer … The printer cannot be used by others on the network.

Audit events have been dropped by the transport. 0

The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

Then, this one additional does show up once near the beginning of the many repetitions of the above:

The content source cannot be accessed.
      Context: Application, SystemIndex Catalog
Details: The URL was already processed during this update. If you received this message while processing alerts, then the alerts are redundant, or else Modify should be used instead of Add. (HRESULT : 0x80040d0d) (0x80040d0d)

Do you get Blue Screens or unexpected reboots?

I cannot say I have *never* had a Blue Screen, but no, I do not recall the last time I had one and neither do I recall ever having an unexpected reboot.

After I had posted yesterday, I realized the error you have mentioned actually appeared 5 or 6 times rather than just once, and here is more from it if that might help:

      Log Name: Application
      Source: Microsoft-Windows-Search
      Date: 6/19/2015 10:27:21 AM
      Event ID: 3036
      Task Category: Gatherer
      Level: Warning
      Keywords: Classic
      User: N/A
Description: The content source cannot be accessed.
      Context: Application, SystemIndex Catalog
Details: The URL was already processed during this update. If you received this message while processing alerts, then the alerts are redundant, or else Modify should be used instead of Add. (HRESULT : 0x80040d0d) (0x80040d0d)

I do not know what “Gatherer” might be, but this one also appeared once:

      Log Name: Application
      Source: Microsoft-Windows-Search
      Date: 5/27/2015 11:18:25 AM
      Event ID: 3036

      Context: Application, SystemIndex Catalog
Details: The object was not found. (HRESULT : 0x80041201) (0x80041201)

I ran the rebuild, then CHKDSK /V and SFC /SCANNOW and no errors were found.

Nothing of any significance, as far as I know:

If your happy with the version you are now using, keep it.

If you want to try the upgrade again, I would recommend doing the following…

I thank you very much! I might try the upgrade again, but at least for now (while working on a big project for my wife) I will just leave things as they are. I do not use/need ‘Lightning’, and I can easily just add ‘31.7.0 for Win7’ to my other Mozilla downloads for my hobby systems going back to Win98.

I had the same issues as the OP more or less. Having upgraded to 38.0.1, I immediately got crashes. Other times it would freeze up for about 20 secs but then come good. However the crashes were constant, at least 5 or 6 a day.

I tried googling the problem, but in the end could not be bothered.

Reverting back to 31.7.0 and no more crashes, so it seems to be something with the new release, for me anyway.

I’m running on T’bird 38.1.0 on W7 Pro x64 without any issues. YMMV
Also use this ‘Portable‘ version on USB at the same level without issues.
