Thunderbird 13.0.1 – Problems with Windows Secrets Newsletter?

Thunderbird 13.0.1 is having problems displaying emails I receive from a number of sources, including the Windows Secrets Newsletter. Another problem source is Yahoo Groups. Thunderbird is not extracting header information such as Subject, From, and Date. Message formatting is being lost, making content almost unreadable. I have checked the messages on the email server, where they look correct. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Other emails, from groups and individuals, are not causing any problems. I am attaching the last Windows Secrets Newsletter I received as a .txt file (I’ve endeavoured to remove items such as my email address from the text). Can anyone offer a solution?

Thank you for replying, and for your tips on how to use Windows Live Mail as a replacement for Thunderbird. I’ll compare the feature set of WLM against the components of Thunderbird which I am currently using (mainly filing and searching of incoming messages). I’m not sure I understand the future for Thunderbird – I thought it would remain “alive”, but without further support of development by Mozilla? I don’t know of anything I want which the current Thunderbird does not provide, and would prefer to avoid having to install and “learn” new email software. That said, I did start looking for alternatives to Thunderbird, and thought that eM Client (http://www.emclient.com/) looked interesting. The free version is limited to 2 accounts, but (at present) I only use one account.

As to my problem of garbled emails from Windows Secrets and other group email services, that ceased as soon as I changed my internet service provider. I had been experiencing constant problems for the last 2 weeks accessing all web sites (typically 4 fails then a successful connection), and didn’t receive a satisfactory solution from my ISP, so yesterday I switched. The new cables and kit arrived and were installed yesterday. Result – no more connection problems, and the latest Windows Secrets Newsletter was correctly handled and processed by Thunderbird. I guess that something in the Newsletter requests access to the server of Windows Secrets, and that when the connection cannot be made the message comes through (to Thunderbird) in the garbled form indicated in the attached file above. I’ll know for next time.

I know this is an old thread, but that makes my update more relevant. It is Jan 2013 and my copy of TB is up to v17 and still get small updates from time to time. I don’t believe it is being discontinued. BTW, I totally dislike Windows Live Mail because they seem to like changing things just for the sake of changing them, which confuses my customers frequently. When I have a customer who is moving from XP/OE, I install TB first and import everything into TB. I use MozBackup (free as well) and save all data to flash drive. I then install TB and MozBackup on new computer and restore data from flashdrive. I prefer the many features of TB and you can install add-ins like a calendar for appointments. I know that it is a “different strokes for different folks thing”, but I couldn’t imagine recommending Windows Live Mail over Thunderbird, I’ve had to deal with too many problems with WLM. Just my opinions for what it’s worth.
