I’m using fully updated Firefox.  For the last few days, when I input my credentials to login to AskWoody, I get this page:

    Error-dialog

I click my “Refresh” icon, then get this page:

    Resend

I click “Resend”, and then AskWoody loads, and I’m logged in.

I’m not sure when this started, since I don’t always login when I visit AskWoody.

      @bbearren

I’ve had no problems at all lately in logging into the site with fully updated Firefox. I also have no add-ons installed in it. I log in the “old fashioned way” of individually typed in username and password.

Are you perhaps copy/pasting your username and password into the input form instead of manually typing them in?

      • #2703028

Just wanted to add that I use Firefox’s built-in tools for removing unwanted ads from pages and removing unwanted tracking from pages as well, basically maxed out, with cookies set to reject all cross site cookies and full first party isolation going on. Tracking blocking provided by disconnect.me’s database furnished to Mozilla, set to level 2…block all trackers. Firefox is also set to block all finger printers as well.

With “all that” in place, I get in to AskWoody with no problem.

I’m loaded with adblockers, tracking blockers, privacy add-ons, etc.  Been running like this since I first started using Firefox a couple or more years ago.

I let Firefox auto-fill username and password, which I’ve also been doing since I started using Firefox.  I also use Firefox’s Primary Password to keep my credentials encrypted on my PC.

This three-step login thing started only a few days ago.  I’ve changed nothing on my end.  This is the only site that exhibits this behavior, and it’s not the only WordPress site I regularly visit.

      Hi bbearren:

I have a Win 10 OS and use MS Defender as my primary AV, and I haven’t had any problems logging in to the AskWoody site with Firefox (FF v130.0.0 since 03-Sep-2024 with Settings | Privacy & Security | Browser Privacy | Enhanced Tracking Protection set to Standard plus uBlock Origin and Malwarebytes Browser Guard extensions). Like Bob99, I don’t auto-fill my login information and always enter my username and password manually.

I also don’t have escalated MVP privileges on this site, which might be relevant if the AskWoody.com site has a “malfunctioning plugin, script, or code that prevents WordPress from functioning correctly” per the support article How to Fix The Critical Error in WordPress (Step by Step).

If you’ve tested with all browser extension disabled and the problem persists, does deleting and re-creating your saved login for AskWoody.com as described in the Mozilla support article Password Manager – Remember, delete and edit logins and passwords in Firefox solve the problem?

I haven’t tried disabling all of my add-ons, it’s an AskWoody site issue.  I frequently visit other WordPress sites, none of which display this issue.  I have tried using “This site” disabling of my add-ons one at a time, with no change.

However, I’ve recently discovered that I can eliminate one step by using the Back arrow (after the WordPress error page loads) in Firefox navigation, and the AskWoody page then opens with me logged in.

Try deleting any Askwoody cookies saved in your browser.

No difference.  As stated previously, I visit other WordPress sites regularly, and AskWoody is the only site where this occurs.  I don’t think the problem is on my end.

DuckDuckGo browser has the same problem.

I use FF. With NoScript, I’m seeing a paypal script (blocked by NoScript). The message sounds like it could be related. Is that script running on your FF?

          I haven’t seen that notice.

I don’t use NoScript.  uBlock Origin and Privacy Badger both block PayPal.

I’m glad to see that someone else is getting this too. I’m running Firefox 129 on Linux Mint Cinnamon. I only have the Ublock Origin Add-On and Clam AV.

What I do when that first message comes up is hit the Firefox Back Arrow and it gets me signed in to Askwoody fine and dandy. From that point I haven’t had any problems at all. This just started happening in the past few days too.

I haven’t added or changed anything and I normally wait for at least a week before updating Firefox. Hope this helps.

        @Charlie

What method do you use to sign in…manually entering the required info or a cut and paste type of entry, such as from a type of password manager or other document of sorts? This info could make a difference in the troubleshooting of this issue.

        • #2703247

I always manually type in my name and password.

Attempted to repro and could not.

Used Firefox. Ublock Origin. Malware browser extension. Privacy badger. Tried with and without Roboform adding in the username and password.  Tried DuckDuckGo.

Could not repro the behavior.  Is there any other configuration or setting you can think of that may be unique?  Any security software?

Can you document what time zone, and then the date and time you are getting the error so I can see if it matches up with an event in the log file?

I get that “critical error” message every time I log in.  It doesn’t matter how many times I do but I usually don’t log in to the Askwoody site more than twice a day.  I am in the Eastern Time Zone.  I usually log on at between 2:00 and 3:00 PM here.  Hope this helps.

Can you narrow it down more?  I need to see if I can find the exact error buried in a log file and correlate it to a time.

Apologies – I’m working with a plug in vendor but I’m not sure if unchecking/not using this plugin will fix your issue or make more problems.

Right now I have the plug in disabled but I have to ensure that it doesn’t cause folks to not be subscribed to the newsletter.

Can you check if you are STILL seeing the log in problem with this plug in that may or may not be the cause of the log in on some users?

Can you see if it has impact on your log in?

When I click the Login button after filling in my credentials, I still get this:

          Critical-Error

Clicking on the Back button on Firefox brings me to the page from which I attempted the login (this one in this case) and I’m logged in.

It doesn’t matter if I used my stored login info or type it in, I get the same result.

      Hello Susan,
I have finished the changes and did tests on the staging with several user accounts with different settings when it came to subscription and data on AskWoody. The new code checks if the user is subscribed to MailChimp; if yes, it gets the address and phone from MailChimp. If the address is an array, it updates it from AskWoody data if possible; if the MailChimp address is not an array, it will create a proper address from the AskWoody data. The problem reported in the thread https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/three-step-login/ is related to some users with invalid MailChimp data, and it was failing after login, and when code tries to subscribe user to MailChimp. New changes fix all that.”
