I was checking and re-writing a Word document using Win 7 Pro. For no reason that I can recall the cursor went wild even though I wasn’t touching the keyboard, or even any part of the machine. Static? Maybe! Programs that were minimized to the Task Bar were popping up on screen in quick succession. After about a minute the show stopped, everything looked normal, just one of those things? Well not quite. When I opened the document to continue editing the very first key I hit was ‘e’;  to my surprise Windows Explorer opened. Closed it, hit e again and got Explorer again. Closed it, again, and tried other keys. r brought up the Run window; d closed the window leaving a blank screen. I re-booted; no change. Tried Notepad, no difference.

So now comes the easy bit. In its hurtling around the screen the cursor must have triggered a key combination that changed these keys from text input to shortcut keys. Can someone please tell me how to reverse this situation?

Did you check the accessibility settings to make that sure that sticky keys is off?

Sounds like your keyboard is playing up (Win E opens Explorer).

      Try another keyboard.

Sounds like either a stuck Win key or StickyKeys has been activated.

To check the first, try an online keyboard tester like KeyboardTester.com. When you launch the test it may show you that a Win key is stuck down. If so, check other keys alongside the Win key in case damage to the keyboard membrane shows up.

To check the second, have a look at this How to Disable Sticky Keys and Filter Keys In Windows 7 article.

      Hope this helps…

Your keyboard might need a dust cleanup, or the Windows Key is stuck. Giving the Windows Key a few sharp taps may fix it.

Thanks for the responses. I’m using a laptop so I’m stuck with the keyboard I have. However, at one juncture I did a re-boot and noticed an icon way down on the lower left corner of the log-in screen. When I hovered the cursor over it “Ease of access” appeared over the icon. I find it hard to image that having various keys doing unexpected things would be much help to anyone, but I clicked it, then continued with the sign in. Guess what? Problem disappeared!

Well that problem disappeared, but when I came back to the laptop after leaving it for a couple of hours the cursor was flashing all over the screen at a ridiculous speed, and I hadn’t even touched the machine. It stopped when I moved the mouse, has been behaving normally as I type this message, but the logically arranged desktop icons have been scattered all over the screen. I believe there are apps that lock the screen, anyone know of a good one?
