Alas, it is not just the games. In addition to encountering some of the same problems that you report with Jigsaw, I have had Microsoft Weather and Microsoft Money behave the same way. Several times Money has lost my watchlist and has even given me for several days the notice “An Error Occurred” when I try to open it.
Your column about MS’s poor quality, especially with their games, today hit a nerve with me. I daily play Mahjong and Sudoku, the free versions. I’d love to add some comments to your list…
In spite of these annoyances, I still enjoy playing both games. MS is missing an opportunity to both realize more income and generate more customer satisfaction from “low hanging fruit” with its lazy and greedy approach to these games. If they would commit resources to improving these games many people like me would be willing to subscribe to these games.
On Sudoku, there are several UI annoyances.
Yes, I think Sudoku is the most annoying game.
I do like the IceBreaker option and I agree that it is slightly annoying because the game takes longer. But that could be solved with one UI improvement – allowing notes on ice. Deducing the number behind ice helps solve empty squares along the column, row, or in the box.
For both games the additional versions are entertaining but there was no choice for people that didnโt want to commit more time to these.
I don’t feel compelled to complete every challenge except for Jigsaw because I use the gold to buy more packs. But if I miss others, I sleep well at night.
but the money from the subscriptions is not going into improvements in the games.
I definitely think that’s true.
Alas, it is not just the games.
Precisely my point. If these games were the only software Microsoft did badly, my article would hardly be warranted.
It seems worth mentioning that paying for these games … has little benefit.
I agree, except with respect to Jigsaw, where the paid version generates twice the gold and where that gold can be used to acquire new puzzles.
But your point about where the money is going seems on target to me. There are some key improvements that could be made to playing Jigsaw, but the only big change was the addition of two more puzzle sizes – “400” and “600.” I put those in quotes because the actual size varies based on the puzzle pack, but they are generally in that range. The rewards for those sizes are significantly larger.
