I installed Windows 8.1 on two laptops, which both came with Windows 8 preinstalled, and one desktop that had been upgraded from Win 7 to Win 8..

Both laptops are a big mess, the desktop is just fine.

One laptop continues to try to load and unload the update. Fun times when needing to get on the computer quickly.

The other laptop still refuses to connect with my Bluetooth ear bud and after an update this morning, now I cannot get a link to open when I right click from a page to open in a new tab. The new tab opens but content does not appear.

It makes me really mad that I am going to have to spend HOURS formatting these two laptops to correct the update problems.

C’mon Microsoft. Do a better job. I feel like I’ve got two iPhones right now.

I have not tried that yet. I see that I cannot turn off my computer until it is completed and I need to put it to sleep in about 30 minutes so I will try that tomorrow. Thank you for the tip. I don’t think it will solve my Bluetooth problem, since that started right after the 8.1 update, but maybe it will solve the IE 11 problem until I get eight hours to format this and the other laptop.

How old are the laptops? If they are still under warranty perhaps the reseller can lend a hand.

Do the laptops have a Restore Partition? If all else fails restore the original Win 8, then remove all the junk that the manufacturer installs, most if not all of which is mostly a duplication of what is already available in Windows. I got rid of EVERYTHING Sony install on our laptops and went back to a generic version of Windows and I did not loose ANY functionality. I would suspect your experience would be similar. After getting rid of the junk try the Upgrade again on one. You might find it actually works better without all the manufacturer junk in the way.

Thank you for your tips. I will do that when I fix the both of them. They are not very old. Mine is eight months and is a Sony Vaio and his is about three months old and is a Toshiba. Forget the model.

We also have Vaio PC’s. I know these do not need all the Sony junk. I have eliminated ALL the Sony junk on both and have lost no functionality. As stated most of this manufacturer junk duplicates things that are already installed in Windows. Since the Win 8.1 upgrade is placed over the existing Win 8, the manufacturer junk may cause upgrade problems. This is one reason why the original OS should be as pristine as the user can make it to eliminate any potential conflicts.

For some new users, who take the advise we’ve been giving for the past two years +, the real fun is just beginning.

I assisted a friend today, who wanted to install W8.1 on his Toshiba laptop (a few years old, with only a 32 bit cpu and a 5400 rpm hard drive).
He took my advise and bought a new hard drive. He got a 1TB, 7200 rpm drive and installed it in the laptop, removing the old drive with W7 on it and committing that drive to an external enclosure.

The install of 8.1 went off without a hitch and I set him up with Classic Shell so he would have a familiar looking Desktop. He really hates all that Metro stuff. As I worked with the little PC, installing AVG and Spybot S&D, he was extatic over how fast it was running. I had to concur….it was really screaming!!! The combo of a faster OS and a faster HD, was terrific. Even his wireless internet connection seemed to be a lot faster.
W8.1 was just an experiment, but he’s already decided to keep it.

Haven’t had time yet to do a system restore, but what I have noticed is that I can open new tabs with links with no problem in Metro. I am still having to jump through hoops to get these new tabs open on my regular desktop. Also, I have not experienced this problem on my PC 8.1 which was originally Win 7.

I’m on a Lenovo G780…after the upgrade I kept getting error messages about the Dolby Sound Manager….eventually fixed with a de-installation/reinstallation of drivers….now left with a flakier IE11 the randomly “encounters an unknown error” and shuts a tab down… so I now also have Chrome and Firefox installed. Expecting a ‘patch Tuesday” update to settle IE11 down at some point.

Otherwise I seem to have got of fairly lightly!
