The Update cannot be applied (Office 2003)

I have been experiencing slow shutdowns, with the shutdown dialog box offering to install an update.

A search of my update history shows many failed attempts at the installation of Update 919029

I decided to download the update and manually install, takes forever but finally I get the error message. “The update cannot be applied”

Can Office 2003 be updated in safe mode or are there any suggestions.

Thanks Hans, you Guys and Gals never cease to amaze me. This is all to say all is not perfect but my next post will confirm.

I did a repair and install of Office Pro 2003 no success, I then followed your advice and found that the path in the registry was not present (So much for Registry Editors) anyway I added the path as detailed in kb884298 I then tried to install the update. Surprisingly all went well with the message that the update had been successfully.

I then searched the Microsoft Update by both Express and Custom and the update 919029 was not shown. I then went to Update History, alas the update 919029 was still shown as failed. I will give a couple of days and see what happens.

Strange happenings, when I shut down after the last post I was again prompted to install an update, I again went through the procedure.

On the next boot, I was greeted with a message in the notification area that there was an update to be installed, this was different. I selected to install, received a dialog box that the update had been successful.

A trip to the Microsoft update page this time showed that the update 919029 had been successfully installed. A couple of boots and no further trouble. Last Registry Cleaner I will use.

I know it’s too late, but: I had the same problem. Uninstalling and reinstalling ORK 11 (the Office Resource kit) completely cured my system.

For others reading this saga, my second post had registry editors, this should have read registry cleaners.
