    WOODY’S WINDOWS

The Windows Start menu super guide — Part III

    By Woody Leonhard

The first two installments of this series showed how to pin just about anything to the Start menu. They also showed how to work with (and against!) the Frequently Used Programs list and the All Programs menu.

In this final installment, you’ll learn how to change the right side of the Start menu — plus I’ll toss in a few extra, surprising tidbits.

I’ve found new versions of the start menu to be an annoyance and a hindrance, rather than bringing anything useful. Likewise with the stubborn insistence on making it difficult to locate files and folders by screwing up windows explorer since forever.

Classic Shell helps. And is worth a review, if it’s not been done already. No charge for it but it is priceless. I can use my machines to get things done again.

For some of us, the computer is a tool used for work, and wasted time is wasted money. Especially if the learning curve does not bring any benefit.

I don’t use the Start Menu links to downloads or pictures — because they open Windows Explorer instead of my favourite file browser. However, one option to leaving the links unchecked is to activate them and change where they point. For example, I have a separate hard drive for my downloads. If I activate the download link and then right-click it to get to properties, I can point the link to my download drive. Ditto for Pictures, and I suspect any of the other links that Microsoft defaults to their own choices.
