I’ve found new versions of the start menu to be an annoyance and a hindrance, rather than bringing anything useful. Likewise with the stubborn insistence on making it difficult to locate files and folders by screwing up windows explorer since forever.

Classic Shell helps. And is worth a review, if it’s not been done already. No charge for it but it is priceless. I can use my machines to get things done again.

I don’t use the Start Menu links to downloads or pictures — because they open Windows Explorer instead of my favourite file browser. However, one option to leaving the links unchecked is to activate them and change where they point. For example, I have a separate hard drive for my downloads. If I activate the download link and then right-click it to get to properties, I can point the link to my download drive. Ditto for Pictures, and I suspect any of the other links that Microsoft defaults to their own choices.
