	PATCH WATCH The rapid-fire updates for Office 2013 continue
	By Susan Bradley May updates highlight the ongoing vulnerabilities in XP and the continuing push to move Windows 8.1 users to Win8.1 Update. I’m changing the rules on .NET updates. Windows 8 and Office 2013 users will see another heavy batch of updates; concentrate on the security updates and leave most of the nonsecurity fixes for later.

From the article Figure 2, it looks like Windows 7 has upgraded IE 9 to IE 10.

Figure 3 shows Windows 8 has upgraded to Windows 8.1 and IE has updated to IE 11 from IE 10.

Last I recall, she was still being cautious and not upgrading Windows 7 IE 9 to IE 10, not upgrading Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 and not upgrading Windows 8 IE 10 to IE 11.

I was still a Microsoft TechNet sub until end of April so I got the Win 8.1 with update as a full download. Sure makes it easy when doing a clean install. I also have Office 2013 installed and I am dismayed at the size of the updates for that. Nearly a gigabyte in April and again in May. I am fortunate that such a download is only about 11 minutes.

I am concerned about the size of the updates. Many people I know get their internet via cell modems and the size of the updates can quickly run through their data allowance. The other thing that happens is that they don’t ever bother with the updates because they can’t afford them.

I have had to do a non-destructive reinstall of Win8.1 in the last couple of days. After that I installed all the updates that were offered, except for 2 brand new .NET updates, but none of them was the “Win8.1 Update” (KB 2919355). Is there any way to tell now if that special update is installed?

Right click a Store app icon on the Start Screen. If “pin to taskbar” is an option it is installed. If you see a power button icon on the Start screen it is installed.

Pre-PS! Now, that update is offered in Windows Update. It was not there when I posted my message. So, I’m all set.

I have right-clicked on several apps on the start screen and there is no “pin to taskbar” for any of them. I haven’t actually installed anything from the Store except the 8.0 to 8.1 change so I don’t know if I’m trying this on an appropriate app. Also, there is no power button shown on the Start Screen.

I installed Win 8.1 with update as a totally new install. I checked my Start screen apps and there were only two without Pin to Taskbar. They were Desktop and This PC and it would not be logical for either of those to be pinned to the taskbar from the Start screen. This PC opens desktop Windows Explorer. I don’t have a Power button on my Start screen. My Start screen is original. I don’t use it, I just ignore it.

You don’t have the update installed yet.

Hi Susan,

You asked for some feedback on W 8.1 Update of what I simply call W 8.1.1. Up until Thursday the main problems I have had have been File Explorer, Opera 12.17 and Opera 21 crashing frequently and Defender’s MpTelemetry occasionally. Sometimes I have actually needed to Restart Fexplorer because it was so hung it wouldn’t crash and occasionally a System Restart was in order. Some of Opera’s crashes May, may have been due to EMET but most were not. Prior to 8.1.0, I had no problems with either Fexplorer of Opera 12.x(which is the only Opera I used at that time) but with 8.1.0 the crashes started. With W 8.1.1 it only got worse/more plentiful.

Now, after the May Security Patches, after a variety of precautions, today I continued on with a layered Update Patching approach which I completed, installing the “Installer Patch” last. I use a Taskbar, “Toolbar” which is a Library the I named “.”. It contains several Folders and Links, accesses to all of my programs/apps in a “Menu Like” format which I have been using since W 7. I could or Fexplorer would crash frequently in the Toolbar but now with the complete set of Updates installed it is significantly faster in access and as yet, has not crashed. It maybe early for Opera but I have had no crashes yet, on either of them. The jury is still out for MpTelemetry.

So there you have it Susan, for me. If things should change significantly I will update this Post.
