      It has been said many times – nothing is free – you’re gonna pay in some way, and it probably won’t be pleasant.

      Even astrophysicist Carl Sagan when speaking astronomically used Billions, not Trillions.

      Why have you posted this? Is the scam from an ad on this site? Is it in email?

      cheers, Paul

      @wavy

      For starters, you could be less generous with your email address. Also, you could scroll down to the bottom of some of those emails, and you’ll probably find a link labeled “unsubscribe”. I say “some” in italics above, because there are outfits that will probably just take that unsubscribe request as a confirmation of a legitimate email and sell that address to others without your knowledge.

      By carefully looking at the links that belong to unsubscribe links, I’ve been able to greatly reduce the volume of such questionable emails such as the one you’ve quoted above.

      One other thing you can do if you are a customer of Ace Hardware is to go into your nearest store and ask for a manager. Ask the manager just how you can get your name removed from their mailing list they may share with or sell to other entities. If Ace has a rewards program that you’re enrolled in, go to the rewards site and see if you can change any of your account’s privacy settings to reduce the likelihood of their sharing your name, mailing address, phone number and email address with others.

      The best anyone here can do to help decide if it’s a legit survey or if it’s a scam would be to post an image or screenshot of the entire email (including the full header) here and maybe we can see something that will let the proverbial cat out of the proverbial bag. If you try doing so, before posting the image please make sure to edit out your email address they used to help preserve your privacy.

      EDIT/UPDATE: After doing just a little searching, I found a slew of references from just over a year ago pointing to that particular email as being a definite scam. Most all of the references said that Ace was keenly aware of the issue, but they’d done everything they could as of then. Apparently these scammers are offshore, so there’s a limited set of tools for law enforcement to use to try and stop them or catch them. The biggest single item that was suggested for end users to help reduce the number of these that actually reach one’s inbox is to employ a fully updated anti-crapware suite that also has a junk mail filter and to keep that (the junk mail filter) fully updated as well. They point out that most of this type of email should be caught by your email provider’s own junk filter(s).

      To see the results I obtained, simply use the following term (without the quotes, of course): “Ace Hardware free Craftsman generator giveaway”. I used Google for my search.
