A boat went sailing one day and stayed out after its bed time. It was dark (no moon) but the sea was calm. It wasn’t sure of its position, but it knew that home was east of a certain landmark. It also remembered that the landmark (in some way) contained its own compass heading.

What was the land mark, and what was the compass heading?

The landmark was the northern light ?

ooww – I hadn’t thought of that one – but NO, I don’t think that you can have a star as a land mark. Anyway, my solution also works in the southern hemisphere (without it changing to the southern cross!)

Now I am thinking of anagrams! Could it be United States being that you can get East from States. Am I in the right direction now?

In that case I would rather think of Lighthouse – it contains the letters of south.

Yep, I agree. Lighthouse. I was just clutching at straws for an example dizzy

Yup – that is correct. I was doing a word puzzle the other day and I thought that I had found south spelt backwards, but instead I had found lighthouse.

That would work in the Southern hemisphere, except for at the South Pole!

True – but I doubt that they need a lighthouse at the south pole!
