I would like to remind folks that that Apple Silicon chips are ARM and won’t run Windows or many Linux distros without considerable additional software.

For multi-media and other graphics-intensive applications, Apple Silicon is a marvel. But for business applications and everyday consumer computing, Apple Silicon has a mixed performance record, and limited software compatibility.

… Apple Silicon chips are ARM and won’t run Windows …

It’s a good point. Not that I think the AskWoody audience is about to cash in their IRAs to convert to Apple.

However, the real question is whether someone is locked into Windows due to the nature of their work or otherwise. In my role as editor here, I could possibly do everything on a Mac — most of the tools I use are cross-platform with one notable exception. And for my Web work, it’s possible.

Nice to know Microsoft has stepped up. There are some Linux distros doing the same, but not many. This does not mean by any stretch that all Windows programs will run on Apple Silicon.
