AskWoody PlusApril 23, 2020 at 2:37 pm #2254893I “think” I have followed the general wisdom to pause updates and I have relied on the DefCon notes to do my updating. But I am confused about pausing updating and yet allowing the KB4550945 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1909 to update. The complication for me is that apparently I can unpause updating and this KB4550945 will dl and be installed. Will there be any other (not desired at this time) updates? I also understand I can go to the Microsoft Catalog and get KB4550945. There are several versions (including needing to figure out what the heck is difference of an ARM64 or an x64 system which I figured out). So finally I put on a blindfold, ripped off the bandaid, swallowed the red pill and dl’ed and ran the x64 version.
Good news. The Universe did not cease to exist in the last 1/2 hour and I can’t tell than anything changed (for better or worse). So happy day!

GuestApril 21, 2020 at 3:04 pm #2252691KB4550945 installed Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.18363.815] without a problem on my Home x64 laptop, using Windows Update. Why not; this update has been nitpicked for months for problems large and small, and I felt if they could not get this update right for 99.99+% of home users, then there is no justice left in the world.

AskWoody MVPApril 21, 2020 at 4:26 pm #2252716Woody, you do realize the 2004 update has been pushed to November, right?
It appears that it will be coming in May, right on schedule.

AskWoody LoungerApril 21, 2020 at 4:10 pm #2252714It installed in my 1909 32Gb eMMC Win10H laptop without apparent trouble (so guess I’ll do it to my other, much-less constrained W10H laptop tonight) — as usual the amount of available free space remaining post-install had been reduced significantly, so some aggressive cleaning was required afterwards.

AskWoody LoungerApril 22, 2020 at 5:29 am #2253629First, I want to say Woody your books are fantastic but, I am not going to make any friends here today. I got caught up in all this obsession with updates destroying the world etc about 3 years ago here on the site for about a year. It took alot of time to keep up with it all and then I decided it wasn’t worth it and thought you know I have had Computer’s for 15 years and not once can I recall a problem with an update and all the other obsessions on this site at least that I am aware of. In other words no problems except maybe one that I made. So, here is my statement . You’re all like a bunch of old ladies sitting around a table drinking tea playing Bridge and ****ing all day.
Thanks

ManagerApril 22, 2020 at 6:38 am #2253672I’m glad. You live a charmed life!
Many of the problems we discuss are minor and infrequent. But some are not. You have to ask yourself if installing everything right away is a greater risk than waiting to see what happens.
In my experience, there’s a small chance that you’ll get bit, but no downside at all to waiting. That’s why i came up with the MS-DEFCON system many years ago.
You have to patch sooner or later, but there’s no reason i know to patch sooner.
That’s why Microsoft built the “Pause Updares” feature into Win10 1903.
Take solace in the fact that many people here agree with you… especially if they’ve never been bit by a bad update.

AskWoody_MVPApril 22, 2020 at 5:49 am #2253636It’s nice that they managed to fix a 16-month old issue in Windows 8.1 🙂
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4480963
Certain operations, such as rename, that you perform on files or folders that are on a Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) may fail with the error, “STATUS_BAD_IMPERSONATION_LEVEL (0xC00000A5)”. This occurs when you perform the operation on a CSV owner node from a process that doesn’t have administrator privilege.
This issue is resolved in KB4550958 for all the releases from January 8, 2019 to April 14, 2020.
i guess Security Only group should get it in May

AskWoody LoungerApril 22, 2020 at 6:42 am #2253678I would like to add a positive note about AskWoody’s website. Keep up the good work. I remember my roots when I had to learn computers OTJ w/o any training umpteen years ago. Training myself back in those days became very helpful. I’m proud of the fact I haven’t had issues with WU’s except for a couple of times that were easy to take care of. I’m not as technically advanced as I’d like to be but eventually I volunteered at helping family, friends & strangers even today at our senior center. I’ve never insulted or added insult to injury for those I help. Thanks to advice here on AskWoody, before that Windows Secrets and a few other sites also, I’m able to keep going. Have a great day everyone.

AskWoody PlusApril 23, 2020 at 4:11 am #2254615Win 10 home ver 1903 went to automatic upgrade to Win 1909 and trashed my desktop. I do not log on with a microsoft account, so Win 1909 upgrade replaced my desktop and removed most files and settings with a temporary new desktop. There was no easy way to change back to my preferred desktop within this upgraded version except to uninstall the upgrade and restore my system back to version 1903. Is there any way to accept the new security patches, but stop the upgrade from taking over my system?

ManagerApril 23, 2020 at 7:28 am #2254663I read a couple of articles yesterday that mention the same thing.
99% chance you’re hitting the race condition that flips you over to a temporary profile. That sounds like a bunch of buzz words, but the bottom line is that everything’s fine, and you need to change your profile back.
Could you confirm:
Is your new desktop different from your old one?
When you look in Documents (among others), is there nothing in the folder?
If so, you very likely got hornswaggled into a temporary profile. Let us know, and we’ll show you how to fix it.

GuestApril 23, 2020 at 12:16 pm #2254793Yes, exactly. Win update to 1909 set up a temporary profile with new desktop, lost files and documents and icons.
(I would like the upgrade mainly for the security patches, but not the new profile.) How to I upgrade and keep my former settings?
Thanks
