This is only a test, no reply required. Wow, you really can’t see that yellow at all!

      Ok, another slightly different test

      text[/color]

Well, I guess that using the “highlight” tag doesn’t work with any special text color. You can either change the text color, or highlight the regularly colored black text, but you can’t do both.

I was trying to highlight red colored text.

How did you get the example of the bbcode itself to appear for me to see just how to do it? It looks like ordinary text, but I can’t seem to get it to work for me. Exactly what steps did you follow?

I think I just found my answer in your initial post on the other forum. I have to add [ pre] and [ /pre] to get the code to show up as text. So, lemme see:

        [highlight][color color=red]text[/color][/highlight]

Well, that didn’t work, so what am I still doing wrong?? I’m doing all of this in the Visual editor instead of the Text editor. Does that make all the difference for some reason?

        [highlight][color color=red]text[/color][/highlight]

Well, after rereading things more carefully (and more s l o w l y), I finally got it, as seen above!

You can also add other bbcode to your text, such as bold, italic, underline, etc., but you have to use the “individual” bbcodes themselves (i.e. [some bbcode] for it to work.

For some reason the forum software does not like it if you use the standard formatting tools at the top of the reply box (or the Ctrl + shortcuts) to apply more than one format to some text.

      Ok, lemme try it again:

      text

It worked!! I discovered that in my earlier trial, I was using the improper sequence to turn off the variables that I’d applied. I was turning off the variables I’d applied in the same order that I’d applied them in. What I should have been doing was turning off the variables in the opposite order that I’d applied them in. So, basically, last on=first off. That seems to have made all the difference.

      [highlight][color color=red]text[/highlight][/color]

is the incorrect sequence to follow.

      The correct sequence is

      [highlight][color color=red]text[/color][/highlight]

Ok, now I can’t get the exact sequence of bbcode to display, properly for others to see and learn from.

OK, I give up! How did you DO it in your post above…posting the code without it having any effect so others can see the proper sequence?? I tried using the “paste as text” tool, but that didn’t work. Yes, I first copied the example into notepad as plain text then copied it from there into this post.

One final test for curiosity’s sake. Does highlighting blue text (with yellow, of course) turn it green??

      text

Nope, it just highlights it nicely, no matter if the text is bold or regular.

      Test Complete!

My thanks to @bigal67 (alejr) and @geekdom !

Thanks for the heads up for potential future issues.

      Y’all please take note:

The use of color in replies has been discouraged in many fora, not just here. For one thing, it invites additional spam attention to the site, and can also cause html issues that need manually addressing by our hard-working volunteer moderators.
It can be very distracting when reading forum threads – some assume their every post to be important enough to use color to get attention, when it is only attention-seeking, and not relevant to the value of their content.

It is acceptable in signatures, when used appropriately.
