I’m not sure this belongs here, but I saw nowhere else…

Why would a “MOV file sound fine in Windows Classic Media Player, fine in QuickTime, and like total crap in the Windows Media Player 11 (“stuttering” visuals and total static on the sound) ?

And I’ve installed the K-Lite Codecs, so I don’t know what the heck is wrong…

What is the sound card on your system? Have you checked for sound driver updates with HP or with the manufacturer of the sound card?

Hans:

Belarc says it’s an NVIDIA audio card, but doesn’t say model etc.

Don’t see anything in the Device Manager either.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the codecs? Do you have the latest version of the codecs?

Because I tend to tamper a bit with my settings (now, now…) I backed up and went to a mirror of just my basic hardware. The clip then gave me good sound, but no video. Then I installed the K-Lite codecs (default settings) and the sound went totally to hell again, with the pcture still not right.

So obviously it’s something in the K-Lite setup that’s wrong…

I’ll check to see if there’s a newer version, and try again, I guess…

It SAYS it’s a QuickTime video… but then why when I install K-kite does the “old Windows player read it fine?

I just went back and re-installed QuickTime and let it set the default extensions. We’ll see if that fixes it.

You stated that you used the K-lite codec pack. Did you install the Quicktime Alternative pack in addition to the basic or full K-lite pack?

At first, no. I wanted to try and rely just in WMP.

When that didn’t help a-tall, I then tried using QT Alt, and that worked, by running through WM Classic, not through v11 of WMP, which still gave me horrible sound.

I understand that (most) MOV files are QT exclusive, but then why does the Classic Player work, where WMP will not?

I’m right now back to a basic Windows install — no K-Lite,with QTime now installed.

Oh well.

According to Windows Media Player multimedia file formats .MOV files from a version of Quicktime later than 2.0 are not supported in WMP11.

“QuickTime content (.mov, .qt)

I have however seen a couple of posts that says WMP should use the QT codecs installed with QT or QTA.

So, if you installed QTA and still can’t play a .MOV file in WMP I’d guess you are stuck with QTA. Most likely whatever codec they use is written specifically for Media Player Classic, or Microsoft changed something in WMP 11 about interfacing with codecs.
