templates and hyperlinks (Word 97 SR2)

Hi Everyone,

I am hoping someone can help me with a tricky problem. I am creating documents in Word with the intent to publish them online. Right now I am setting up a template. Within the template, I have created a link to another Word doc in the same file as the template (until I move the template to the Templates file). The link works fine in the template, but when I open a new doc with the template the link doesn’t work in the template. I tried checking the path, but it seems the same.

The template will be used by more than one person and we do not currently have a shared template folder. The intent is for each of us to create a copy of the template and move it to the template file on our hard drives. Even so, I haven’t moved the template yet, and the link is not working in the doc based on the template. Is it hopeless?

I have a template that has a link to a file, and the link works fine in documents based on the template. Maybe try first removing the link (under insert hyperlink, there will be a button that says that), exit from the hyperlink dialog, then go back in and add the link again; make sure to unselect the Use relative path for hyperlink box.

Thanks Wendy, I did try redoing the link and it didn’t work. However, then I tried inserting a web address instead of browsing to a document file and it worked fine. As I so often end up doing with Word, I did an end-around to solve my problem. I would still be interested if someone knows why it didn’t work with a regular file.

Hi Laura:

I had a little trouble following. The link works in the template, but when you double click the template in Window’s Explorer, to open a new document based on the template, the link doesn’t work. It seems to me that it might be a difference between the relative & full path.
