Can anyone tell me how to make my hp laptop retain disk usage settings? I reset the usage from 50 mb to 250 mb and it reverts back on it’s own. Have had a responce from IEForum@groups.msn but the settings he suggested needing correction were already set to Disk quotas are disabled. I have only been working with computers for about a year. Any help really appreciated!!! Using XP and IE7. THANKS!!!

AskWoody LoungerJune 4, 2007 at 8:33 pm #1067244Is this the way you have tried to set usage?
———————————-
Open My Computer.
Right-click the volume for which you want to assign default quota values, and then click Properties.
In the Properties dialog box, click the Quota tab.
On the Quota properties page, select the Enable quota management check box.
Click the Limit disk space to option. This activates fields for disk space limit and warning levels.
Type numeric values in the text fields, select a disk space limit unit from the drop-down list, and then click OK. You can use decimal values (for example, 20.5 MB).Make sure you click on “apply” on the way out of the properties screen.
Your drive must be formatted to NTFS in order for this to work, NOT FAT32.

AskWoody LoungerJune 4, 2007 at 10:49 pm #1067258Thanks for your reply. Originally I have tried to change settings using the tools drop down menu. Going to internet options, settings (browsing history), change 50 to 250 and OK my way out. Internet Forum suggested I turn on Windows, go to my computer and right click on the hard disk Icon go down to properties click it and pick the Quota tab. Said I would prob find a tick against ENABLE QUOTA MANAGEMENT, I found that DISK QUOTAS ARE DISABLED. K. had experienced this prob on an HP before. This is not apparently my problem. Since there are no quotas set in Windows, where should I look next? Remember, not to good with this stuff YET!! Should I attempt toset quotas as per your post? Don’t know my drive format!!
Linda (Will never see you at the top–not enough time to learn it all)

To find out how your drive(s) are formatted. Click on “My Computer”, then Right click on the drive in question, then Properties. On the first page under general you will see the drive format. NTFS or FAT32 usually.I would try to check the enable drive quota box and fill in your quotassize.
If this doesn’t work, you can always go back and Uncheck the Enable quota box.

AskWoody LoungerJune 5, 2007 at 4:11 am #1067271Can you try to explain a bit better what you mean by “make my hp laptop retain disk usage settings”? Where do you see the 50MB and 250MB numbers?

Ah – I have read the posts again, and I think you mean the disk space used by Internet Explorer for temporary files, that you set from Tools > Internet Settings, is reverting from the 50MB that you specify. Can you tell us which version of Internet Explorer you are using. -

AskWoody LoungerJune 5, 2007 at 5:46 am #1067281The only thing I can think of is that you could have a Group Policy that doesn’t allow you to change this.
Try Start > Run > gpedit.msc > OK
expand the following entry on the left
User Configuration Administrative Templates Internet Explorer
check the status of the entry for"Disable Changing Temporary Internet files settings"

AskWoody LoungerJune 5, 2007 at 1:29 pm #1067313Hello Hans,
Thanks for the info. Seems just a bit over my head right now. Will save for future reference!! Am I trying to do something I don’t really need to do??? The link you refer me to says the the 50mb setting is the one to use! I could be trying to change something that is set at the correct level. I may be wrong in thinking that increasing this setting will allow better game play and faster response of my computer!!?!?!? Would be appreciative of you input to my perception!!!
TY,

AskWoody LoungerJune 5, 2007 at 1:44 pm #106731550 MB is a bit on the small side, but not seriously so – it is within the recommended range, and if you don’t succeed in changing it, browsing should still be OK. A very large cache size is unnecessary, and can even slow down things.
If you feel uncomfortable with trying the steps from the link I posted (I can understand that!), I’d leave it as it is. -

AskWoody LoungerJune 5, 2007 at 2:02 pm #1067318Thanks Hans!!!!!
Your input has been most valuable. I think that for now I will just let this laptop have it’s own way. In the future I may feel confident enough to take it on. Will keep reading and learning and someday I might tackle it!!! I can be persistant!!
Thank you so much for your assistance.
Linda

AskWoody LoungerJune 5, 2007 at 7:31 pm #1067393The funny thing about all this, Hans, is that I use Firefox and the default cache size (I don’t think I’VE ever messed with it!) is 50 MB. I’ve NEVER had a speed problem with Fx and if I look at the cache and check its properties it usually shows files totaling 55-60 MB. On the other hand, my Internet Options temporary files setting is at 252 MB and I’ve not touched that one either. Since I hardly ever use IE7, I don’t know if that’s a good or bad number but I haven’t bothered with it.
It does seem to me that I read “somewhere” once that having a browser cache that is quite large is “not necessarily” helpful, but I’ve not worried about either since my browsing speed is usually at “click speed.”

AskWoody LoungerJune 5, 2007 at 11:07 pm #1067430Al,
I agree with you, both in what you have found related to Fx/IE and about what has been said about cache size and speed. At the moment I can’t remember what cache size I had before Fx 2, but think it was slightly bigger than 50 MB. Since I installed Fx 2, I now find it at 50 MB. With my broadband, and my browsing habits it works great, as it seems for you.
For IE, however, the cache is set at 640 MB. I can’t recall having changed that since my last OS install 8-9 months ago. The size was preserved during the upgrade to IE7. I do not use IE since Fx 1.5 came out (and between Fx 0.9 to 1.5, I used IE some times per month). Still, as you know, several programs uses the IE TIF folder. So I am quite happy with a larger cache size for IE. If I am watching a half hour program in Fx via Media Player the download goes into IE cache. Same for, although really small, updates for Spywareblaster, some Google Earth files etc. So since IE TIF is sometimes used as a “system cache” it can be argued that it can be a little bigger than just 50 MB.
But as you say, if one have high speed access the cache size is not, most of the time, a real issue
