    YouTube video here Included in January’s updates was a fix to Microsoft Defender.  If you use a third party antivirus are you at risk? In a word?  NO.

      This was even fixed automatically on an old, no-ESU Windows 7 box here.

        Correct! The MSE engine was updated over a month ago as reported on that date.

        Windows - commercial by definition and now function...

      To find the update on W8.1.

      Go to Control Panel, or type “defender” in the start box.
      Run Windows Defender.
      Click the down arrow next to “Help”, on the top right.
      Select “About”.
      Look for “Engine version”.

        Same method works for Win 7 and Microsoft Security Essentials (which is also vulnerable according to the CVE-2021-1647 article).

      My Engine version is 1.1.17700.4 but I have not installed January patches or checked for updates. hmmm

        The Engine version will typically be updated when a virus definition update occurs; it’s normally not part of the monthly patches.
