The Windows 11 taskbar will be restricted to appear only at the bottom of the screen. That bothers me a lot because I much prefer it on the left side:

    • I have 5 monitors. One half of one of them is dedicated to the taskbar showing a vertical list of tasks with the full text. I find that very convenient.
    • The common screen size of 1920 x 1080 is already restricted in the vertical direction; a taskbar at the bottom takes up even more vertical space. I work a lot with MSWord documents in portrait mode. That vertical space is precious.

Can Microsoft be lobbied not keep the moveable taskbar feature? Will some other company provide the capability?

The task bar won’t take any screen space if you toggle on the “Auto Hide” feature. If you haven’t tried it, check it out. It’s in taskbar settings. With auto hide on, the taskbar disappears and will pop up only when you move your cursor to the bottom (or in your case the side) of the screen or tap the Win key. I’ve used auto hide for many years. I’m assuming it will still be available in Win 11. It will be rude awakening if not!

I run a “fat” task bar with a long row of tool bar icons under the normal task bar, but it makes no difference with auto hide.

I would not be surprised to see some third party software ware that fixes this. Maybe Power Toys.

I figure the Fences folks will come up with alternatives. In the meantime give feedback in the feedback venue that you HATE this.

@wsrobertrackl, I prefer having the taskbar at the bottom of the screen, but I agree wholeheartedly that you should have the choice of where to place it, with that ability preferably built into the OS rather than being something that you have to find out on your own and hunt around the Web for, like Aero Glass transparency and the classic Start menu.

Use the Feedback Hub to register your disappointment in the strongest but still polite terms. If enough people bring it up, Microsoft will entertain changing it.

Will Classic Shell, or Open Shell still work on Windows 11?
