Sometimes when I restart my computer (which is just a few times a week) my taskbar is set up differently. I have many icons all in a specific sequence so I don’t have to search for the program I want to launch. These get re-arranged. Plus, the actual taskbar reverts to having the running programs on the right, when I want them along a bottom row on their own. Also, I have Google Deskbar that goes into different configurations.

At least Vista’s taskbar is more easily manipulated than XP’s was. I can put things back i place easily–but why should I have to? What is going wrong?

I am NOT sure what you mean by this, but I think, what you are asking can not be done.

There is four major areas of the taskbar. Starting on the left is the Start button, then there is the Quick Launch (if you it turned on) then the task area and then the Notification area. The task bar can be made to display more than one row of icons, they will ALWAYS start at the top row of the given area.
The arrangement of the Notification area is based on when they get started and will NEVER be the same when you restart, if you move any of them, which I do NOT think you can do.

It might help if you were to post a screen shot what you want.

The problem of random repositioning of program shortcut icons has been reported with older versions of Windows. I have only two program icons in my Vista Quick Launch toolbar and not surprisingly they are stable in position.

A reported fix for random repositioning is to rename all the .lnk files numerically, i.e. 01 filename.lnk, 02 filename, lnk etc. This doesn’t work. I tried to switch the position of my two Quick Launch icons without success.
