How can I create a fully automated Table of Figures (TOF) where the captions are based on Headings 1, 2, 3, and 4? I need the TOF to list Figure 1-1, Figure 1.1-1, Figure 1.1.1-1, Figure 1.1.1.1-1, etc. Currently I use a workaround. In addition to using the Figure label, I use the New Label option to create new labels called Figure2, Figure3, and Figure4 when I apply the captions. (The number after “Figure” matches the Heading style level.) I edit the captions by deleting the 2, 3, and 4 after the word “Figure”.Then I create 4 separate TOFs, one for each label used to create the captions. When I update all of the TOFs, gaps are created between them and I have to manually delete these gaps to make them appear as one TOF. The resulting captions and TOF look good enough to fool anyone, and they are automated, but there has got to be an easier way. Is there?

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 22, 2011 at 1:27 pm #1268562See this link. You use the same label for all figures, manipulate the field codes for the chapter and figure numbering, and generate a single figure TOF. It may be a little more work up front, but you won’t have fixes after every update. You could create an autotext for each.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 22, 2011 at 2:16 pm #1268566Thanks, Pam. I’ve been playing around with this today. When I create a new label in the Caption dialog (e.g., Figure2) and specify Heading 2 from the Numbering dialog, the STYLEREF numbers you mention are created automatically. Because I end up with “Figure2 1.1-1” as the caption, I must remember to delete the 2 after “Figure”, no big deal. The same goes for captions based on Headings 3, 4, etc. Also, I found that when creating both a List of Tables and a List of Figures in the same report, as long as I assign a different style to the table captions (e.g., Caption_Table), I can create a good LOF and LOT by basing them on their styles. The captions, in all of their formats, appear in the correct order. No piecing together LOFs is necessary, as I had been doing before.
