    I’ve made a document using outlining and now would very much like a table of contents on the first page. I can make it, but no matter what I say, the TOC has more than the 2 levels I want to see.

    Help please.

      I assume that you have set the “Number of Levels to DIsplay” that appears in the Insert TOC dialogue?

      Yep – that’s why I’m so confused!!!

        OK

        It is possible that your headers are set to the wrong level.

        Each Heading Style knows its level. These can be set by using Format Styles.

        If nothing else – its worth a check.

      Have a look at the field code for the TOC by selecting it and pressing Shift-F9

      Does it look like this { TOC o “1-4”}

      If it does, try a few other switches such as {TOC o “1-4” t “Heading 3,3,Heading 4,4”} where ‘Heading 3’ and ‘Heading 4’ are the styles you are missing from the TOC. Once you have altered the field code, press F9 to update it and see what you have now got.

      If you want only two levels to show, & you’ve checked that your heading levels are set properly, the syntax of your TOC field should be:
      { TOC o “1-2”}

      When you press F9, update the entire TOC, not just the page numbers.
      Hope this helps,
