I’m creating a template where I want a level 1 heading to be in the first page header using the Heading 1 style. I want Word to pick up this information for the table of contents but it doesn’t want to play. I’ve also tried using the manual field code method even though I don’t really want to have to do that. Anyway, neither of them seem to work.

Is this just not possible and do I have to resort to bringing this information into the main body of the template? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Um, I don’t mean to sound rude, but why are you so adverse to including in the main body?

I agree with you Karen smile. I’m not averse to it. In fact I’d much rather do it that way. It’s because my client wants this to appear with the automatic numbering on every page in a particular table format 1 row 2 cols, number in a box shape in col one and subject text in col 2 which is much wider. Lots of jolly formtting. I hate it. They love it. I know I can achieve what I want by using StyleRef, but then I have to create a section break after every section’s first page and change the header position to 3cm instead of 1.5 so page two’s header lines up with page one’s heading within the body text. I mean . . . that works fine. I just thought it would be easier if I didn’t have to do any of that, just get the text picked up by the TOC from the header itself.

I’m sorry if I sound dense blush but I’m trying to visualize the layout you describe. I think[/b] I know what you’re saying, but please clarify the following:

          (1) Table of Contents
          * reflecting heading info
          * reflecting numbers such as 1-1, 1-2, etc. or just 1, 2, etc)?
          (2) Heading (number and name?) reflected at top of each page in that section?
          (3) Header shows page numbers (reflected as just 1, 2, etc.?) in one cell and relevant heading info in adjacent cell?
          (4) Each Heading begin new page; and header must align identically from top edge of page?

          Thanks.

            Hi Karen
            Yes to 1 and 2
No to 3 (page numbers are in the footer)
            Sort of to 4

Basically I really just want to know whether it’s possible for the TOC to pick up text in a header which has been put in using either the Heading 1 or Heading 2 style. This will be automatically picked up if the text is in the main body and formatted with Heading 1 or 2 style, but doesn’t want to do it if the text (with Heading 1 or 2 style)is in a header.

Just wishing and hoping I guess. sigh

I’ve gone through just about any option that seems even remotely logical. I’m afraid the simple answer is to place each heading item in a new section and set up the header with different first page, turning off same as previous.

I don’t think I could’ve been explaining myself too well here. hairy I’m quite ok doing the headers; having different first page; turning off same as previous etc. etc. It’s just that when I produce a table of contents, it simply won’t pick up any text that is in a header even though that text is formatted using either Heading 1 or Heading 2 styles. Even when I do it manually in the header with the TOC field code it doesn’t want to play.

When I move the text to the main body of the document, and update the TOC, naturally they appear.

I guess it just can’t be done. Never mind. bummer

Ha Haaa! Not success … but when I tried again to manually include the header text in the TOC using Insert, Field etc. etc. (instead of pressing Ctrl+F9 and typing TOC “Heading 1” *MERGEFORMAT inside the squiggly brackets which I had been doing), I got the following message.

“Error! Table not allowed in footnote, endnote, header, footer, comment, or text box.”

So at least I’ll stop trying now. sad
Thanks for all the attempts to help me on this one. cheers

I had a similar problem to this once. I found that I did in fact have to bring the chapter heading out of the header and into the main text, but since I used the “Different First Page” option in Page Setup, it wasn’t so painful. Since the first page has its own setup, you can leave the odd and even headers alone, and they won’t be affected by what’s on the first page of each chapter. Being able to reformat the first page knowing it wasn’t going to affect the other headers was a very important factor for me at the time, but I don’t know if your circumstances are similar. HTH.

      Suzanna,

One more idea. I’ve done something like this so maybe it would help.

Create a bookmark out of the H1 text (I don’t think you can capture the number but maybe there’s a way for that too). You can then xref the bookmark in the header. I’ve done this with body text and then xref’d the the bookmark in a footer. Works. I think you can also play with the styles.

      Hope it works.
