I’m creating a template where I want a level 1 heading to be in the first page header using the Heading 1 style. I want Word to pick up this information for the table of contents but it doesn’t want to play. I’ve also tried using the manual field code method even though I don’t really want to have to do that. Anyway, neither of them seem to work.
Is this just not possible and do I have to resort to bringing this information into the main body of the template? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
. I’m not averse to it. In fact I’d much rather do it that way. It’s because my client wants this to appear with the automatic numbering on every page in a particular table format 1 row 2 cols, number in a box shape in col one and subject text in col 2 which is much wider. Lots of jolly formtting. I hate it. They love it. I know I can achieve what I want by using StyleRef, but then I have to create a section break after every section’s first page and change the header position to 3cm instead of 1.5 so page two’s header lines up with page one’s heading within the body text. I mean . . . that works fine. I just thought it would be easier if I didn’t have to do any of that, just get the text picked up by the TOC from the header itself.

I’m quite ok doing the headers; having different first page; turning off same as previous etc. etc. It’s just that when I produce a table of contents, it simply won’t pick up any text that is in a header even though that text is formatted using either Heading 1 or Heading 2 styles. Even when I do it manually in the header with the TOC field code it doesn’t want to play.
